What is Panzura CloudFS?

Panzura transforms cloud storage into a global file system, so enterprises can use the cloud as a high performance, globally available data center.

Panzura CloudFS aims to empower organizations to work collaboratively across multiple sites, using one authoritative data source and providing automatic real-time file locking, immediate file consistency and local-feeling file performance to every user regardless of location or number of sites.

The vendor states Panzura's data fabric allows companies to de-duplicate and consolidate data, achieving up to 70% reduction in overall unstructured data storage footprint. Panzura uses immutable data snapshots to provide data durability without replication. These immutable snapshots are impervious to ransomware and provide a granular point-in-time ability to restore files, folders or even the entire file system, replacing existing backup and disaster recovery processes.

Panzura supports enterprises when they:

  • Need to replace legacy NAS systems at multiple sites
  • Are managing multiple data sets and backups
  • Need to protect against ransomware attacks with immutable data
  • Need immediate data consistency at all locations
  • Have teams in multiple locations that need to work collaboratively
  • Use latency-prone applications such as Revit, Solidworks and other CAD applications
  • Need to transfer large media files fast
  • Run critical legacy applications that won't read cloud-based files without re-write
  • Want data resilience without having to replicate data

We purchased Panzura to alleviate the issue of high latency between different sites for an engineering firm. We completely replaced our file storage at each site with caching servers instead and it is being utilized by the entire company. We found cost savings in not having large amounts of redundant storage at each location and instead using Azure Blob Storage.
  • File caching.
  • Data usage metrics.
  • Cost savings.
  • More flexibility in platforms to run on.
  • More support for high IO applications like arcMap.
Panzura works well for companies that have a high amount of data with cross site collaboration being done. The caching ensures you don't need huge investments of storage at each site and the cloud storage ensures high availability over what can be done locally. Also helps eliminate duplicate data across sites and/or small variations in the same data.
  • Huge increase in collaboration.
  • Cheaper to maintain and purchase than traditional file servers.
We looked at Talon but had better initial discussions with Panzura. We also looked at DFS Replication but at hundreds of TB of data it was not nearly as cost effective. Panzura had more experience with engineering applications and the complexities that were involved in certain ways apps wrote and read data.
Hands down support is the best part of Panzura. Their techs are always helpful, always knowledgeable, and consistently solve complex problems quickly. You can definitely tell they hire their support folks from the top tier of other companies and they go above and beyond what I have come to expect in terms of support compared to other companies.

Panzura is used as are primary file system with 44TB of data shared across 30 offices. The main problem Panzura solves for us is real time file locking. It's also a very efficient tool for backup and recovery.
  • Real time file locking
  • Backup and recovery
  • Easy access to all your files
  • Faster browsing of photos
I believe Panzura can fit into any company structure.
  • People are always working on the latest copy of their files. Since we implemented Panzura no files have [been] overwritten and [no] data has been lost.
There are several other devices but Panzura is best of class.

Panzura CSGs are being used in conjunction with Cleversafe to create a national DFS structure for access by thousands of users. This puts information at the fingertips of numerous staff members across the country as multiple similar cases are litigated. It also provides IT a easier method to implement both disaster recovery via Panzura replication and 30 day local backup/restore capabilities via snapshotting.
  • Ease of configuration - I installed well over 50 Panzura CSGs in under 6 months. The web interfaces are easy to navigate and the CLI is easy to learn.
  • Simplified replication creation. Pick your partners and go, hub & spoke, full mesh, take your pick the GUI makes it clear to understand what is being done.
  • Efficient storage usage. Expandable via additional drive enclosures, resilient due to replication and efficient due to deduplication.
  • Hybrid cloud done right. With APIs to external CAS storage you can create the private cloud you want, and with hooks to external resources like S3 take advantage of the public cloud space for economy of scale.
  • I would like to see more connectors. Tie in to traditional block storage or NAS. Additional cloud connectors to products like Hitachi Content Platform.
  • I would like to see a collaborative product created between Panzura and Riverbed. I envision an almost perfect small footprint ROBO solution where Riverbed provides the compute+WAN optimization and Panzura provides the storage/risiliancy components. Combine the boxes into a single 4U solution and you have a near perfect product for remote offices.
Decent WAN connectivity is required. If I was working oversees at a vSat connected office, Panzura would be of limited use. Other than that, for any hardline connected sites, with a 10mb connection or better (more is always better, as is true for most things in life) a pair of Panzura CSG devices can immediately provide some piece of mind.
  • Exceptional positive impact on availability - as users move so do their files.
  • Panzura+DFS allowed for simple chargeback models to be implemented.
