I use Parse.ly daily! Multiple times a day--I always have a tab open. We use it as our main tool to see how our editorial is performing. It is the easiest way for us to look at time spent on articles and parse our content by site sections and tags. This is used heavily by audience development, social, and the editorial analysts.
  • Easily group content by tag
  • Easily group content by site section
  • Accurately count time spent on articles
  • Get a general understanding of where traffic is coming from
  • I would love to see YTD functionality as a default date setting where you can choose this week, last month, etc.
  • If a tag is added after you publish, Parse.ly only counts the traffic after it was added
  • Buggy right now--if I click on a post and then adjust the date, it still reflects the metric from the original date set
Measuring time spent, grouping content by site sections and/or tags. If we are really trying to see where traffic is coming from, it is harder to get more granular on Parse.ly. I am also sometimes looking at specific parts of the site that aren't content and there is no way for me to look at these custom elements.
  • Time spent is a KPI for us, so this tool helps us best measure this metric
  • Accessible enough for editors to be able to pop in and check it on their own and make some decisions
I use then in tandem; where Parse.ly lacks, I go over to Google Analytics and vice versa. Sometimes I need to look deeper at referral sources and that is where Parse.ly isn't as strong, especially if I am looking at a bigger set of content.
I never used it before this job and quickly understood it.
I have no say in this, but this tool is critical to my job; Google Analytics just would not do the same job that Parse.ly does.
Seems to be more bugs than I encounter in Google Analytics, but Parse.ly is always very quick to answer my questions or fix something. It seems like most of my issues are due to communications around my requests being outside of the package we pay for with this tool (i.e., only two years of data).
Yes
Yes, support usually responds in an hour or less.
We had an issue with staging links showing up in Parse.ly and support was able to walk me through what we needed to change so they would no longer do that--this can throw off averages and post counts. I did not have a ton of knowledge on what they were talking about and they were able to put it into terms I could understand.
  • Finding top stories for a timeframe
  • Finding top stories by site section
  • Getting metrics for a certain time period
  • Year-to-date content is annoying for measuring against the previous period quickly
  • It would be nice to be able to sort by bottom performing instead of clicking to the last page
Yes, but I don't use it
