  • Cost effective compare to other tools(QlikView, Tableau CRM), license is much cheaper than other BI tools.
  • Easy development and preferred by customers.
  • offer attractive representation of data, power BI gives almost 250 different kinds of charts and graphs to represent the data.
  • maintenance is very low as cloud based solution.
  • With DAX, you can perform complex calculations in dashboards.

Microsoft Power BI is similar to Excel, but it is much better to display data and / or values in tables, charts, and is much easier to use and configure. It is used weekly in the financial sector where there are meetings with the leaders to evaluate all types of costs. We chose to use it as a tool that does not necessitate a knowledge of programming, but it gets much better by having an advanced knowledge in Microsoft Excel.

One main competitor of Power BI is Tableau. Tableau has been around longer than Power BI so it can feel a little more refined in areas, however Power BI is catching up quickly. Tableau can be more expensive than Power BI. If you want more features and more refinement, and don't mind extra cost, then Tableau may be a better choice. But if you want something that's integrated with many things in O365, and are satisfied with fewer bells and whistles, Power BI may be the better option.

Not directly comparable, but we used Telerik previously to create visualisations and our own dashboards, which worked and looked nice but required much more setup to get running as it needed a web server to display the dashboards via HTML. Otherwise, we just used SQL SSIS to create Excel reports with the data required and emailed out, ugly and painful.

Oracle was nice, super expensive to implement if it's not in use already. JobDiva is choppy and heavy on the system while does not give great reports. Salesforce is good; remote access is good however their support is terrible.

When you look at the whole MS BI stack, it is far and away the best solution. But if you are solely looking at PowerBI.com (Power BI for Office 365), it's features are limited to creating graphs and visualizations. For example, you create cubes and data models in Cognos, but you need SSAS to do this before sending the finished model to PowerBI.com.

Pricing and functionality. Tableau Desktop is a very capable self-service business intelligence and analytics solution. The very rich visualization capabilities are far superior to that of Excel and Power BI. However, the pricing for the Power BI desktop is extraordinary. If you own Excel 2010 or 2013, you can download the functionality for free. And more often than not, the visualization capabilities of Excel are quite good enough. Another reason we selected Power BI is the shallow learning curve for users, compared to Tableau and other similar solutions. Excel is very familiar to most data analysts and finance/accounting teams. It is a comfortable environment on which to add powerful analytic capabilities.
