Brief overview of Data Domain
- Positive: The high compression (58.0x) and data reduction (98.3%) have allowed us to optimize the storage for efficient usage.
- Negative: even after adding capacity, we are running out of space. Adding capacity adds to the overall TCO (e.g. lease cost).

DataDomain is the best backup target for our organization
- We were able to avoid upgrading/replacing a very expensive tape library. ROI was break-even the first year.
- We cut almost one man-hour per day in tape-handling duties.
- Restore of large data sets (an entire GroupWise post office, for instance) was cut from 15 hours to 15 minutes.

Data Domain - Tape is dead!
- Data Domain says 20+ hours per week when compared to using a tape library. Once the unit is configured it basically takes care of itself.
- With MTree replication we no longer need to send tapes to an offsite storage facility.
- Having a second data domain at our DR site allows us to perform recoveries from any of our replicated backups. We do not have to order and wait for tapes to arrive.

Data Domain - Stable, Reliable.... just works!
- The biggest impact we have had from Data Domain is that we went from an overall backups success rate of ~65% when using a competitor to a ~95% success rate.
- We have been able to greatly reduce recovery time and recovery point objectives through the use of Data Domain vs tape.
- As an organization we are able to reliably recover the business data when it is needed.
