What is Schoology Learning?

Schoology, now a PowerSchool Unified Classroom product, is a learning management system (LMS). Schoology’s platform is built specifically for the needs of K-12 students, teachers, and administrators. Schoology aims to combine as many parts of the learning process as possible into a single platform. By doing this they aim to simplify the learning experience for students, parents, and teachers.

The Basic Package is free for instructors and includes features such as an Academic Activity Dashboard, Instructional Tools, and a Native Document Grader. The Enterprise Package includes the Basic Package and additional features such as Systemwide Administration, User Management, and Workload Planning.

PowerSchool acquired Schoology in late 2019.

Overview of Schoology Features

Schoology focuses on student mastery of learning objectives by offering a proficiency model of grading and traditional numeric grades. Through their online platform, it is simple to deliver assessments to students regardless of their location. Assessments are flexible and can be quick quizzes, locally-created benchmarks, or district-wide assessments.

Through Schoology’s built-in data and analytics, educators can determine what is working and what is not at several different levels. The reports generated give information at both the class and school level and can be used by teachers to determine how their students are doing, as well as administrators to ensure that all students school-wide are on track. Reports can be shared via a secure URL, and access is filtered based on staff permissions

Schoology aims to ensure effective communication between parents and educators. Teachers can send weekly digests about classroom activities. Parents can instantly access their students' grades to get an idea of their child’s full learning experience.

Per the vendor, Schoology is easy to use in combination with other learning tools and comes with over 200 native integrations. Educators can use said tools to quickly create assignments. Courses can be built from scratch, or educators can use Schoology’s content library that contains over 300 applications. Courses can be easily shared with other teachers or can be re-used across multiple academic years.

Collaboration is encouraged between teachers through the Public Groups pages on Schoology. These are community pages where educators can share ideas, ask questions and learn from each other.

Tailored Education Solutions

Schoology aims to create a highly tailored educational experience for students that ensures that they meet learning objectives in the way that works best for them. By offering personalized pacing, students can work through the material at the speed that suits their individual needs.

Educators also have the option of creating lessons that give students a choice in how they learn the material. Students can select the tasks that suit their learning style, and a grade for that lesson appears in the grade book, regardless of which task was selected.

Schoology also emphasizes the importance of collaboration between students, even in a remote learning environment. The Groups feature allows students to communicate and store resources about sports, clubs, etc. outside of their course modules.

Schoology no longer provides all of the features of Canvas for a lower cost. In fact, as someone who now uses both LMSs, at different jobs, I can no longer recommend Schoology as features are disappearing and support has become almost worthless.

I think Schoology Learning is a step up to Google Classroom because it is a much more advanced interface and I think that it is a better tool for the students to use. It does engage students and helps them understand the topic at a deeper level than Google Classroom and the level of engagement is higher in my opinion.

I did not select this system; my district bosses did and the only reason I can think of is that it was probably cheaper than the other bids. It has been more than four years since I used any other system, but I do remember both EasyGradePro and Illuminate being more customizable for teachers.

As mentioned before, Schoology has a lot more capabilities than Google Classroom. Granted that Schoology is an actual LMS and Google Classroom is not. Assessments are better; guardian views and information; communication with our Student Information System; Better organization of files and assignments.
I find Canvas & Blackboard difficult to navigate and understand.

Schoology fit the right price point, was a familiar platform for some of our students because they use it at their other schools, which were two reasons we did not choose [an] Infinite Campus. Additionally, we used Moodle before, but it was not as robust for the areas that we wanted to move our learning management system into.

I had no choice when it came to selecting the program, but I will say that Schoology Learning, a PowerSchool Unified Classroom presents the content way more clearly than Google Classroom. Schoology Learning, a PowerSchool Unified Classroom takes way fewer clicks to go where you need to go. Google Classroom is a tad more user friendly as far as getting started goes, but Schoology Learning, a PowerSchool Unified Classroom is, without a doubt, a way more refined program.

Schoology is a blend of most online programs. In areas of assigning work and grading, it does really well. In terms of having an intuitive classroom to navigate, other programs are better.

I've worked with several different learning management systems. Schoology has more to offer and allows students to work within the LMS. Other apps and programs can be embedded and opened inside the LMS. Educators can create and use great graphics within folders, pages, assignments, and assessments. While the free version has many great features, the enterprise version (for schools and districts) allows teachers to collaborate and share information.

Schoology is well supported and is easy to use. It might not have all of the features of a larger LMS like Blackboard or Moodle, but that is also what makes it easier to use. It does not have the "scroll of death" that you would experience with Edmodo. Content is organized and easy to find.

Schoology was selected by my district. I like Schoology thus far. However, it is limited because teachers need subscriptions to access and add their classes. I prefer to use Edmodo to connect my students with their global peers to communicate, collaborate, and create.

I think Schoology is the best of the best. This is the all-around LMS in my opinion and offers features that these other platforms do not. The ability to personalize your class and tailor it to your expectations and wants is unparalleled. Schoology does all the little things right while continuing to enhance their features.

Although there are other good platforms for managing online classrooms, we did not find these as robust and were not as user-friendly in terms of interface, and their ability to connect to other online education platforms. It is also the best available platform for connecting to our particular SYS (Student Information System).

Moodle was too messy and complicated. Teachers did not like the appearance. iTunes University worked well with our iPads but 3 years ago it did not have all the features that we wanted and needed. We selected Schoology due to its ease of use and the fact that at the time it had everything we needed.

I have used or experimented with a few different Learning Management Systems while teaching or taking classes. In my opinion, Schoology has been the most user friendly when it comes to creating and submitting assignments. Schoology is the only LMS that I have used in both a teacher and student role. From the student side of things I was able to navigate through Schoology easier than the other LMS options that I have used in coursework.

  • Canvas
I have used several LMS platforms. The one most closely mirroring Schoology is Canvas Instructure. I believe both to be great and very similar. This is my first year with Schoology, so I do not feel completely qualified to draw firm conclusions at this time, but I have had successful experiences with both systems.

I have taught using both Edmodo and Google Classroom. While both were easier than Schoology was to get in the beginning, Schoology is infinitely more powerful than either of them was. I can do so much more, and differentiate so much easier using Schoology than I could with either of my previous LMSs.

Schoology is so much nicer at being able to organize the course materials however you want. Google Classroom would organize it in date order similar to like a Facebook feed. That made it a nightmare for me as the teacher to direct my students to where certain files were located.

I prefer Schoology over Google and Microsoft classrooms because it has more functionality than other similar products. Everything is available in one location without need to link to many other sites.

Schoology has far more options than any of the above three as far as communication, dissemination of information, and assignment and test updates and tracking. Moodle was fairly primitive in its design; Blackboard is a bit clunky in its use, and, while Google Classroom is innovative, there are far more educational options for differentiation and organization through Schoology.
