PrestaShop, an open-source e-commerce solution, has been widely used by web developers in Singapore for over 10 years to create professional eStores. One notable use case involved a real estate company that implemented PrestaShop on their website, enabling clients to add properties to their cart and make payments using electronic methods. This integration allowed the company to achieve numerous sales and streamlined negotiations by allowing clients to quickly pay for a portion of the property digitally. However, the company eventually switched to a simpler system that focused on direct inquiries for available properties.

Another use case involved a consultancy group that recommended PrestaShop for its flexibility and open-source nature, especially when compared to BigCommerce. This solution was chosen as the e-commerce platform for a primary website along with several supplementary ones. Similarly, a company decided to migrate from an outdated Magento installation to PrestaShop due to its ability to meet their needs. Although they faced some challenges related to system complexity and slow performance during the transition, they were able to overcome these obstacles.

Currently, PrestaShop is being utilized by various businesses and organizations for different purposes. For example, it is being used to run an e-commerce website where daily sales are made and products are directly delivered to customers. Additionally, several companies make use of PrestaShop's back office for managing professional customer purchases across different departments. Moreover, small local businesses rely on PrestaShop to adjust and modify bookings. Users have found PrestaShop to be convenient and user-friendly, catering both to hardcore developers and newcomers in the industry.

In another instance, an organization successfully launched an online storefront and sold handmade goods using PrestaShop, taking advantage of its comprehensive functionality. Furthermore, numerous small companies with low-budget requirements have benefitted from PrestaShop's extensive feature set for their e-commerce projects. Lastly, six different websites utilize PrestaShop as the sole e-commerce platform for selling laser-engraved products to both the general public and internal clients.

Overall, PrestaShop has proven to be a powerful e-commerce solution that caters to a wide range of users, from developers seeking customization capabilities to small businesses looking for budget-friendly options.

PayPal Integration: Many users have found the integration of the PayPal button modality with PrestaShop to be extremely helpful. It allows them to complete payments quickly and digitally in just a few seconds, streamlining the transaction process.

Instant Catalog Updates: Reviewers greatly appreciate the ease of performing inventory reviews and modifying the PrestaShop catalog. They can make changes to the catalog and product conditions, which are instantly reflected on their website without any delay.

Digital Invoices: The creation of digital invoices for each client who made an advance payment is highly valued by users. This valuable feature makes it easier to complete property negotiations as customers can easily identify the specific property that was paid for.

Lack of Support: Some users have expressed frustration with the lack of support from PrestaShop. They have mentioned that there is no type of support available to help users learn how to use the service, and when they reached out for help, their requests were never responded to.

Expensive Templates: Several reviewers have found the templates for customizing their store on PrestaShop to be too expensive. While they acknowledge that the templates are attractive, the high prices forced them to settle for a simple design on their website.

Limited Documentation: Many users feel that PrestaShop has very little online documentation compared to other e-commerce platforms. This lack of documentation makes it difficult for them to find answers to their questions and troubleshoot issues effectively.

Users frequently recommend the following approaches for using PrestaShop:

  1. Use the self-hosted version of PrestaShop, especially for individuals with limited technical knowledge.

  2. Consider utilizing 3rd party modules to enhance the functionality of PrestaShop. It is advised to shop around for these modules to find the best fit for specific business needs.

  3. Ensure there is readily available technical support and invest in a 3rd party backup module for rolling back to previous versions if needed.

In addition, users suggest trying the demo shop before committing to ensure it offers all the necessary features. Small businesses and medium-sized e-commerce startups are especially recommended to consider PrestaShop as an affordable solution that caters to their needs. Additionally, having a good server, implementing cache techniques, and utilizing a Content Data Network (CDN) are suggested for improved response times.

Companies can't remove reviews or game the system. Here's why

Last year we started the process to move from an outdated Magento installation to a new e-commerce platform. After reviewing several systems, we found PrestaShop met our needs best and started the migration process. During the configuration process we noticed that the system can get very complex and especially the slow performance caused us a lot of headaches. In due time we had to upgrade our server resources to a least be able to work with the system without running into Ajax issues. Another very annoying problem are random white screens, especially in the admin area.

  • Very flexible product configuration
  • Clear and well structured workflow with customer management and emails
  • Very slow. Google complains about loading times, means the ranking will be bad!
  • Very unstable--loading a module can crash the back office. Hard to restore--even a full restore sometimes won't work.
  • Needs mostly additional modules, which are not free
  • Display module positions are template dependent. Once a template is changed, Prestashop does not remember the old settings. For updates it's recommended to change to the default template--this means all customization done on our template is gone.
  • Weak reporting
Only OK if used in a managed installation. Don't touch it otherwise. Waste of time and resources.

  • Due to the lack of performance, SEO was never good
  • ROI currently negative due to high amount of time spent to keep it running
  • We now have to decide on another system, as we can't run Prestashop in the future--double the effort and cost!
Magento (open source): very technical and complicated to install and configure
OpenCart: Easy to install, very fast, lacks in functionality--needs extra modules
WooCommerce: OK, but runs on top of WordPress, product configurations very simple - missing out on complex product variants

The lack of performance and the unstable system make it very hard to use it for a serious e-commerce application.

Since we use PrestaShop OpenSource there is only community support. What we found is that many other users fight with the same problems and there seems no solution or input from the PrestaShop developers' side.

Must have solid web server experience, with PHP, MySQL, and backup/restore procedures.

OpenSource with a good user base. Must have required options for product complexity and shipping.
System stability and performance will be the new lead factors. If some functions are not there, we will have to work around. But if the system itself is not stable, it does not help.
