PRTG Network Monitor is a versatile tool that has proven to be invaluable for a wide range of users and organizations. Small and mid-sized firms with limited IT resources have found it to be an effective solution for monitoring their servers, switches, storage, and essential services almost 24/7. By providing a quick overview of many systems at once, the software saves these organizations from receiving alerts from multiple places or watching several different screens.

Telecommunications companies also benefit greatly from PRTG Network Monitor's capabilities. It allows them to monitor major backhaul telecommunication links, thousands of devices deployed in multiple locations, and even multi-tenanted virtual environments. The software's event monitoring, alerting, capacity management, and uptime reporting features provide these companies with the metrics they need for OLAs and SLAs.

Similarly, organizations rely on PRTG Network Monitor to keep a close eye on their network devices, servers, and services both locally and remotely. By providing real-time information about the system's health and alerting the team when something goes offline or down, the software enables proactive issue resolution and quicker recovery. The ability to display the software on TVs throughout the department also allows other employees to see the status of the infrastructure.

In various industries, such as R&D departments or customer service centers, PRTG Network Monitor serves as a crucial fault and performance monitoring tool. It helps these teams monitor services, databases, bandwidth utilization, server performance, and application uptime. The historical data provided by the software aids in tracking trends and establishing baselines for resources. Notably, its flexibility in configuration and customization is appreciated by users across different settings.

PRTG Network Monitor is not limited to specific sectors but offers value to many use cases. From monitoring network gear and VPN tunnels to overseeing classroom environments or casinos' game floors' kiosks, this software proves its versatility time and again. Its extensive functionality allows users to consolidate multiple monitoring systems, meet customer SLAs, and proactively address potential problems before they impact users' experience. PRTG Network Monitor truly shines as a reliable and adaptable tool for network monitoring and system availability.

Intuitive Interface: Users have consistently praised PRTG for its highly intuitive interface, which makes it incredibly easy to use and set up credentials and device monitoring. Many reviewers appreciate how the user-friendly interface streamlines the process of navigating the system.

Out-of-the-Box Monitoring: PRTG's comprehensive monitoring capabilities right out of the box have impressed numerous users. The product offers detailed monitoring without requiring extensive customization or additional packages, saving valuable time and effort during implementation.

Automatic Device Discovery: PRTG's automatic device discovery functionality has received positive feedback from several users. They highlight how this feature simplifies the setup process by automatically detecting and modeling various types of devices, ensuring hassle-free monitoring with minimal manual configuration required.

Confusing User Interface: Some users have found the user interface to be perplexing, difficult to navigate, and lacking in intuitiveness. They have expressed a desire for improvements in the management of the user interface, including visual interfaces and simplification of the top ribbon menu.

Steep Learning Curve: There is a learning curve associated with using the software, especially for those who are new to monitoring solutions. Users have reported difficulties with the setup process and the auto scan feature, and they would appreciate a more straightforward navigation system in the web GUI.

Expensive Pricing Structure: Many users find frustration with the pricing structure since costs increase significantly once they exceed the 100 sensor limit of the free version. The licensing cost is considered expensive, particularly for small businesses. Users feel that there should be a more budget-friendly software option available for medium-level customers.

Users recommend purchasing a licensed version of the software for proper functioning. They have found that the licensed version offers better performance and functionality compared to the free version.

Reviewers advise regularly updating the software to resolve any bugs or issues. By keeping the software up-to-date, users have access to the latest features, enhancements, and security patches.

Customers suggest engaging with the user community for troubleshooting assistance. By exploring the user community, users can find solutions to their queries or problems more quickly and benefit from shared tips, tricks, and workarounds.

We selected PRTG Network Monitor because it's very easy to deploy and setup. It doesn't require too many skills or resources. With the trial license you can test it and see how many info you can get about your infrastructure and choose what to put under control and how to send notifications for alarm. You can also create reports and send them to the IT manager.

I have only used it once and found it good also. But whatever things I wanted, I got them from PRTG Network Monitor; so basically, my purpose was over, so further R&D was not required. I adhered with the PRTG Network Monitor tool only happily. Many other tools are also available in the market.

PRTG Network Manager is an easy to get going tool, easy to implement, and can go really deep into the monitoring. It's a powerful tool to store monitoring data and to do network dashboards. Paessler, the PRTG Network Monitor proprietary has an excellent partnership with other hardware fabricants, so it is easy to get things to work

  • SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (npm)
PRTG is much simpler to use than SolarWinds. SolarWinds wins in the category of a massive amount of purpose built bolt-ons. If the intention is to go after a system which you can fully use to customize and integrate into your needs easily, PRTG wins. This was what the need was as other tools existing in the organization to do many of the "purpose built" tasks - this was to fit a niche and has grown considerably since purchase based on the flexibility of the product.

PRTG is much simpler to implement than both Nagios and Zenoss; mind you, this was before Zenoss released their cloud option.

It has a wide range of sensors and some are specific to both storage and network devices. The previous version didn't have any NetApp reporting at the time of the evaluation, which is something that was important to us.

Pricing was pretty competitive for what is being offered. I also recently needed additional licenses and the ease of upgrading was shocking.

In my opinion, there are many products in the market that provide vast monitoring options and a lot of customization flexibility and out-of-the-box integration with 3rd party tools such as Service Now, Splunk, and reporting tools. I find PRTG as a good tool for the following reasons:
1. Low cost and budget tool with almost all capability similar to other products.
2. Fewer efforts and skills required comparatively.
3. Out-of-the-box probes availability.
4. Well architected application with scaling options.

PRTG is with us for years, the same goes for pingdom. We didn't select one over the other, we use all of them but sometimes for different monitoring needs and sometimes in parallel for the same needs. Some of these tools were chosen not for monitoring purposes (for example, for our product's logs reporting), but since they also have monitoring tools we use them as well.

I have deployed and tested three products for evaluation I found [PRTG Network Monitor] very easy to deploy, the deployment literally took not more than one hour including basic configuration and network discovery. After deployment few configuration changes and creation of maps, reports and little tweaking is required. [Then] it would go through its process of recommendation that took some time to complete, while [on] other hand other software's took lot of time to install and configure. And features were also missing, which resulted in decision in favor of [PRTG Network Monitor].

In My organization we are using both solutions (1. PRTG & 2. Nagios)but almost Users are prefer PRTG due to its
1. simplicity (Dashboard features)
2. Brief Reporting (Logs etc.)
3. Auto backup of its internal data base.
4. Discovery of new network devices on network.
and less time tacking, therefore

PRTG is a light weight Network Fault and performance monitoring tool with low cost and lower server specification. Although it is light weight still it covers all required network fault and performance monitoring parameters out of the box and also allows you to customize monitoring parameters and alerts/threshold. Some issues are there with respect to scalability as compared to other tools in the market.

Cost and feature set was the biggest reason we went with PRTG. You get a ton of functionality for what you pay for. The ease of setup was a bonus once we started working with it. After working with Solarwinds and Nagios - I can't imagine going back to those solutions.

Compared to SolarWinds licensing model on monitors, we bought PRTG xl-1 unlimited license monitoring any device without any difficulty and not specific to servers, devices, network devices. We monitor any device in our organisation. We monitor location, temperature, specific dashboards and plenty of things. PRTG loses its compatibility when it comes to load handling, need to do proper balancing or else face a number of issues.

In comparison with two other similar tools I have used in the past, I would put PRTG in the middle strictly in terms of features/performance, but at the top when overall value is considered. While SolarWinds does have some features that PRTG lacks, it comes at a much higher price point so it does not have the same ROI. On the other hand, Nagios, while open source, is not as user-friendly nor as robust as PRTG, thus making PRTG an excellent product choice if you are in the market for a robust, yet budget-friendly, network device monitoring tool.

I found Nagios very difficult to manage and use. I used it on a Linux server and we are a Windows shop so it was not as easy for other IT staff to administer. It was also mostly text-based configuration so it was more difficult to configure.

We used a product called Total Network Monitor for a time, but it was fundamental and was not suited to enterprise environments. PRTG Network Monitor was the only platform that provided the flexibility and configuration that we required at a reasonable price point. There are certainly other products that offer similar functionality (Solarwinds Orion, for example), but the licensing models and initial investment costs could not compete.

The big use was the user interface that PRTG offers for net-flow traffic. Whatsup and Splunk both trap net-flow information but PRTG's was a bit easier to weed through to figure out the issues. I did mention quick and dirty and PRTG can be installed and run perfectly on a simple desktop unlike WhatsUp Gold and Splunk.

With PRTG it comes down to ease of use. Compared with products like Nagios, PRTG is so much simpler and more straightforward to set up, use and maintain, making it easy to manage existing sensors as well as add new ones, and create a clear and easy monitoring platform. Users with little or no experience in the product can easily set up new sensors from the library from the hundreds available and more experienced users can write their own.
There is a wealth of information available online as well giving answers t almost every question I've ever had to ask with regards to the product.

This product was far cheaper than the SolarWinds packaged solutions I have used in the past, and provides nearly as much value, though you may have to put more work in initially to realize that value. I thought it was far more useful than WhatsUp, whose value went down markedly with subsequent versions.

Being able to monitor multiple networks and devices all over the country. and easy of deployment has set PTRG apart from the competition. I have used multiple monitoring tools in the past 20 years and PTRG works right out of the box with minimal configuration compared with others.
