What is Vuforia Engine?

Vuforia Engine is an augmented reality software solution boasting over half a million registered users and developers worldwide. The software is designed to bring together computer vision, dynamic features and software tools to enable developers to create sophisticated, branded AR experiences. With a wide range of supported devices on the market, Vuforia aims to ensure applications will reach the broadest audience possible.

Additionally, the vendor provides that Vuforia's agnostic technology paired with support for development platforms like Unity enables users high creative freedom when designing an AR application.

Vuforia Engine Features

  • Supported: Model Targets: Recognize objects by shape using digital 3D models. Place AR content on multiple objects from multiple views on a wide variety of items like industrial equipment, vehicles, and toys.
  • Supported: Image Targets: The easiest way to put AR content on flat objects such as magazine pages, trading cards and photographs.
  • Supported: Multi Targets: Used for objects with flat surfaces and multiple sides, or that contain multiple images. Product packaging, posters and murals all make great Multi Targets.
  • Supported: Cylinder Targets: Enable you to place AR content on objects with cylindrical and conical shapes. Soda cans, bottles and tubes with printed designs are great candidates for Cylinder Targets.
  • Supported: Object Targets: Created by scanning an object. They are a good option for toys and other products with rich surface details and a consistent shape.
  • Supported: VuMarks: Allow you to identify and add content to series of objects. They’re a great way to add information and content to product lines, inventory and machinery.

I used it for some AR promos for a client, they wanted a presentation to show off their company (which is a multimedia company), and so I decided to create an interactive app with AR using Unity and Vuforia Engine. The app was simple but impressive: when opening the camera and using a target (their business card), a character appeared on top of that doing some animations leading to a bigger animation showing their company name.
  • AR SDK integration with Unity engine
  • AR performance in mobile
  • Great documentation and examples
  • Performance when using unity (the device heats up).
  • Image marker works fine but surface detection tends to fail still.
  • Even though there's a free plan, there are many alternatives now where they cost less or they're even free.
Definetely when needing an image target based AR experience, I'd go with Vuforia Engine, the implementation is pretty straightforward (at least when using UNITY SDK), it is well documented and there are plenty of examples to start with. I wouldn't recommend it yet for tracking objects or environments if it is for commercial purposes, because it tends to fail from time to time from my experience.
  • The tracking images (target), is the most used feature for presenting AR.
  • The integration with Unity
  • I've used the free version only, the client is responsible for paying the premium version if needed; so the ROI has been for the actual development.
