Our FlashBlade is an evaluation unit. My team tests storage arrays from various vendors to determine compatibility & performance with our software. We share results with our internal storage team and write white papers on how to best config an array for optimal performance without software.
  • Ease of manageability. A manual isn't needed to navigate the GUI. Config options are easy to locate.
  • The FlashBlade helps to overcome some of the performance limitations built into the NFS protocol.
  • Quick and simple installation.
  • Granular control of alerting.
  • Inability to serve FC block storage.
  • Performance analysis feature needs the ability to quickly pull up the heavy-hitters.
Shared file systems are needed in nearly all large environments. most options are considered exotic & many of SAS's customers do not want to run them. Everyone knows NFS, but traditional NFS lacked performance. Pure offers a performant NFS with their FlashBlade
  • Pure has greatly narrowed the performance gap between file storage and fiber channel block storage with FlashBlade. Exotic file systems and costly FC fabrics are no longer needed to run performant storage.
  • Training is not required for a storage admin who has never touched a Pure array. Everything is where you would expect to find it.
The NetApp a800 we tested was 14% faster than Pure FlashBlade with NFS workloads. However, NetApp lacked ease of administration and performing simple tasks such as creating multiple NFS volumes required scripting from the command line. Our flashblade contained 15 baldes and our NetApp was a clustered pair with each half containing 24 nvme devices.
Yes
The Purity/FB 3.1.4 upgrade process went smoothly with no down time and took around nine hours to upgrade all fifteen blades. The new release brought no unexpected impacts of either functionality or performance.
  • mixed protocol functionality (ability to serve the same files to both smb & nfs clients)
  • microsoft active directory ldap integration
  • less-limited mixed-protocol support. there are still many limitations on sharing to windows clients.
  • more control over microsoft active-directory integration. currently need pure support intervention to join active-directory with disjoint namespaces

Pure FlashBlade is used solely as a backup target for our enterprise backup solution. It stores all of our server backups both physical and virtual. We utilize two FlashBlades for this purpose, one at our primary data center and a second one at our offsite for long term retention and archiving.
  • Reliable backup storage.
  • Quick backups.
  • Quick restores.
  • Easy to manage.
  • Increased analytics and reporting.
Since we only use our FlashBaldes for backup storage, I can only state that it is well suited for that purpose.
  • The speed of restores greatly reduces our RTO which means less downtime.
  • Faster backups mean we can back up critical systems more often in smaller predictable windows.
Prior to FlashBlade, we used Avamar for our enterprise backup solution. While Avamar is a solid product, the FlashBlade provides better and more predictable stable performance. Since owning FlashBlade, we have never had any hardware issues or a drop in performance over time. It is always on, always up and always running at lightning speeds.
Yes
Everything went as planned, it was a very simple non-disruptive process. We didn't have any unexpected problems during the upgrade. The support from Pure was excellent and it made the process very easy. We felt confident that Pure was 100% invested in ensuring that the upgrade process went off without a hitch.

The FlashBlade is being used to protect our Veeam backups. The Systems Engineering team are the only ones that use it, but because it is used as part of our backup infrastructure it supports the entire company. The FlashBlade is a repository to store all production backups. We've enabled Safemode on the FlashBlade to protect production backups from ransomware.
  • Speed of read and write
  • Familiar interface to that of Pure Storage FlashArray
  • Ability to scale out
  • Initial configuration is complex/confusing
  • Capacity
Since implementing FlashBlade into our backup infrastructure, the speed at which the backups complete on a nightly basis has increased tremendously. On the reverse, the time it takes to restore from the FlashBlade is very minimal. Couple the FlashBlade with a FlashArray and the backup and restores are insanely fast. The FlashBlade works well in our scenario as a backup target/ It would not work so well as a standard SAN scenario. While it would be fast, the cost does not make it feasible.
  • Somewhat peace of mind from ransomware
  • Increased speed of restores
  • Increased speed of backups
We did not evaluate any other products, the FlashBlade has nothing similar in my opinion.

There was no downtime when the upgrade occurred, it went fast and smooth. Pure does an amazing QA job on all their firmware releases. Pure Support performed the upgrade remotely and allowed me to be hands off.
