Demo 14 – Making Maps in QGIS with the Print Layout (Pt. I)

This demo shows how to download US Census data from censusreporter.org and use QGIS to create a racial dot map, where each dot represents one or more people, color-coded by race.  To do this, we create a QGIS polygon style that uses multiple "random marker fill" symbol layers.

This QGIS tutorial covers semi-automated mapping over multiple areas of interest using a coverage layer, which defines the map areas, and the Atlas Panel in the Print Layout window. These procedures facilitate rapidly generating maps - reducing manual efforts in production. Follow along as we demonstrate by automating the production of maps showing percent population changes in Census Tracts by Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs), the latter acting as the coverage layer. Follow along as we create the coverage layer, prepare the print layout and dynamically format items – such as text, titles and scale-bars - which will update automatically based on the map location, scale and content once the Atlas is generated. Previewing and exporting the Atlas, adding coordinate grids to maps, and saving a Layout as a template for repeated use are also shown. Although some maps require minor edits, these skills enable large quantities of readily-useable maps to be produced with minimal user input. Apply these procedures to datasets and areas relevant to your own areas of work and expertise to reduce efforts in creating striking and easily interpretable maps.

Additional preparation steps and formatting procedures for the Print Layout are shown at the end of the video.

Stay tuned for the next demo, where we’ll cover the use of different geoprocessing tools to spatially overlay and integrate feature geometries and attributes of vector layers. These procedures enable spatial proximities and relations between layers and variables of interest to be established for a variety of analytical and visualization purposes. We’ll demonstrate these tools with a simple example, examining land-cover conditions within 30 metres of water features (also known as riparian areas).

I work constantly with geoprocessing products, and QGIS is fundamental for all phases of this work, from data collection to the final result. Displaying originally textual data (albeit with a spatial reference) on maps, and then analyzing (quantitatively and qualitatively) those maps are the main reasons to use this software here at GISMarxev.
