What is Qlik Sense?

Qlik Sense is a business intelligence (BI) and visual analytics platform that supports a range of analytic use cases. Built on Qlik’s Associative Engine, it supports a full range of users and use-cases across the life-cycle from data to insight – with self-service analytics, interactive dashboards, conversational analytics, custom and embedded analytics, mobile analytics, and reporting. The solution comes in three different editions - Qlik Sense Enterprise, Business, and Team. Qlik Sense can be deployed in the cloud or on-premises.

The Qlik Sense analytics platforms aims to empower everyone in organizations to make data-driven decisions. People of all skill levels get analytical power, with associative exploration and search, AI-powered insight suggestions, AI-accelerated creation and data prep, advanced analytics integration, and natural-language, conversational interaction. They can share and communicate the insights they discover and get answers anywhere they work – with interactive and secure online and offline mobility. And for the enterprise, users get a platform with open and standard APIs for customization and extension, data integration and connectivity, centralized management and governance, and a Kubernetes based SaaS / multi-cloud architecture driving scalability across combinations of on-premise, private, and public cloud environments.

Across the organization in different departments like IT, Sales, Tech support, Professional services, finance and more.
  • Easy to use: As compared to most of other BI tools we found Qlik to be the most easy to learn. Our users hi from basic user to building advanced apps in very short span.
  • Agile: with the current pace the business world is changing and moving we needed to be very agile. Qlik is very agile to work with.
  • Performance: being in memory tool Qlik sense performance is at par with our business expectations. The data loads are very fast using the native connectors as well
  • Report delivery: Printing is offered as a solution which is not user friendly and needs a lot of improvement.
  • Extensions: need a certified extension process so that we can trust them before bringing into our Qlik environment
  • Way to make a data model using 2 apps. Rather than creating a 3rd app, we should have a way to connect 2 apps
All the analytical needs can be solved by Qlik Sense. Operational reporting on live data is not something Qlick Sense does very well

Qlik Sense is used by the analyst team to create retail reports. These reports can then be used by the various retail departments and business divisions to plan targets and address exclusion report issues.
  • Easy to drill down.
  • Clean user interface.
  • Easy to set up the different calculations and reports.
  • Low ETL capabilities.
  • Learning curve from Qlik View desktop to Qlik Sense.
  • Not as versatile as Qlik View desktop.
Qlik Sense is best suited for reports, detailed graphs, and drill-down analysis. However, it is less appropriate if the data being used is not clean.

Qlik Sense was deployed across the organisation that has 1000+ user base. The organisation is a leading insurer in the UK. The pricing team needed advanced analytical capability and technology that not only does analytics but should be able to ingest large data sets for analysis. After careful consideration (of using QlikView for sometime and evaluating others in the market), Qlik Sense was chosen. Qlik Sense helped in processing large data sets containing billions of rows across hundreds of rating factors. Qlik Sense did eventually empower the power users with self service analytical capabilities.
  • Ingesting and processing large data sets containing hundreds of millions to billions of rows
  • Intelligent association of disparate data sets. providing early visibility of the connections in the underlying data
  • Ability to embed statistical programming code like R for advanced analytical processing and visualisation
  • Offers both Self Service Data Integration and Self Service BI and Analytics capabilities
  • Flexible deployment architecture
  • Licensing was expensive compared to other market players
  • Qlik Sense plays a lot around memory management. An average user, unless they understand the data modeling, cannot optimise Qlik Sense usage properly which could lead to poor implementation. Qlik Sense should offer training in this space.
Qlik Sense is an excellent choice for self service data integration and self service BI and Analytics, capable of ingesting and processing large data sets. It has a flexible deployment architecture that should ease the infrastructure spend.
Data Modeling that influences Memory management is the crux for this tool. Suitable training is necessary for optimal exploitation of the tool.
While Tableau then was better at self service visualisation and analytics than self service, Qlik View was its direct competitor. With Qlik Sense coming into play, the equations changed and Qlik Sense had upper hand with its excellent self service data integration capabilities that a power user with access to data sources can ingest data on their own without relying on the IT. Also, the data sets were compressed by Qlik Sense (to the factor of 10 at times) that enabled it to consume lesser memory, thereby leaving a lot of memory for in-memory processing. These and a few other features really made Qlik Sense stand apart from the competition.

  • Street pricing of actuarial premiums

  • Product Usability
  • Existing Relationship with the Vendor
Existing relationship, in the sense that another product, QlikView, was in use already by around 500 users.
I think we did a proper evaluation so that there's no need to change.
  • Implemented in-house
Yes
Gradual deployment, with respect to infrastructure
Change management was a big part of the implementation and was well-handled
  • Deployment issues
Hire Qlik consultants. It's better done by them or with their aid.
Quick and responsive usually.
When I was working on the deployment architecture I was helped by their consultants, which eased my efforts to quite an extent.
  • Drag and Drop visualisation
  • Connecting to data sources including the Cloud sources
  • More than product feature, its the data architecture (that impacts memory management) that was cumbersome. Needs some help, but once you get it right, you are on an easy sail
  • Creating new user defined functions
Yes, but I don't use it
It's very simple and easy to use, with minimal learning curve

We use Qlik Sense across the whole organization. Business Unit like marketing, risk, sales and also top management use it. We've created a lot of qlik sense apps that reads data from our data warehouse and help users and managers to make data discovery and data visualization. It's cool because of dashboards, filters, speed on visualization and stuff like that. We've created apps to visualize company's data and to make better and faster analysis to take better business decisions.
  • in a single app you can have billions of records
  • you can search between every data in your app, and it's really fast
  • dashboards are cool, and it's fantastic the integration between filters and click on dashboards. cool also the "lazo" filter function
  • data load editor allow you to use a lot of functions and methods to analyse your data
  • qlik sense cloud isn't very cool. I need a cloud space where to upload apps and where to get the app to put on sense server
  • data model viewer: you can't really interact with it and modify any foreign key between your dataset
  • full screen function is available only on destkop sense, not when you navigate an app deployed on your sense server (by browser)
data discovery and data visualization. I like the capability to connect to databases and on the server to refresh data. It's remarkable the export function (you can export data from graphics and tables and matrix to pdf, csv file and so on). Be aware putting too much data in your application; the user should be lost!
easier to use, easier to do analysis with that product. better data integration and coolest dashboards.
