QuickBooks for non-accountant business owners

Our QB Online user is the company's owner and operator. My work experience and educational background are entirely unrelated to finance or accounting, and yet, I am completely proficient in QB. Since QB Online does so much of the work for you and is very intuitive, the main skills needed are general computer skills and strong attention to detail.

At least someone in your organization needs to have an Intermediate level of understanding of accounting principles if you use QBO for a range of functions like AP, AR, Payroll, Financial Statements, etc.

QuickBooks Online has a pretty responsive and great support staff. There isn't much need for anyone to support QuickBooks Online as it's hosted and managed by QuickBooks themselves. Anyone who navigate the support panel can troubleshoot their issues.

The in house staff to support QuickBooks Online needs to be experienced in using accounting software. It requires more than basic accounting knowledge. I would say 1-2 years of solid working experience in accounting, or co-op student with over 2-3 years of accounting training. It requires the knowledge of accounting cycles and accounting principles.

QBOA -- It time to make the move.

In addition to basic computing/online skills a support person will need basic accounting skills. We require our people to be QuickBooks certified before working with clients supporting QBO. I highly recommend that any support people participate in QB Power Hours and Sleeter Group webinars to understand from their peers which issues they are seeing and either their resolutions or work arounds.
