Lack of Multiple Referral Discounts: Several reviewers have expressed disappointment with the lack of a good work-around for applying multiple discounts for referrals in Recurly. They would like the ability to easily apply a discount to a client account and remove it if a referral ends service.

Limited Customization Options: A common concern among users is the limited customization options in Recurly. Some customers feel that certain features should be optional add-ons to save costs, while others desire more flexibility in customizing dunning, pricing, charge descriptions, and quantity after an invoice has been created.

Based on user reviews, here are the three most common recommendations for Recurly:

  1. Users recommend discussing billing and reporting needs with the Recurly team. This ensures that specific requirements are met, as some manual reporting may be necessary for certain data.

Recurly is used in our organization as a reoccurring billing solution option for our customers. Recurly is used primarily in the accounting/finance department of the company. Recurly addresses the problem of maintaining numerous customers and being able to accurately billing them on a reoccurring basis.
  • Recurly does a excellent job providing support and documentation for both the user-side of the program and the developer side of the program.
  • Exporting reports is one area of Recurly that is lacking. In today's business world, accountants need the ability to easily custom make reports to be able to fit their business needs. Right now we must spend resources to pull numerous reports and reference them with each other to get the information we need.
  • The ability to automatically prorate the 1st invoice and to be able to set default renewal date of for new subscribers would be a great feature to implement.
Recurly would be best suited for a company that had the resources to implement Recurly's API. If a company had limited resources, I would make sure that they where aware of the limited reporting.
  • Recurly has streamlined our customer's ability to automatically sign up for subscriptions. Even though there are inherited limitations, Recurly has been continually improving their system.
  • We have seen a increased rate of self subscribed customers since implementation.
I believe we would continue to use Recurly because they have shown that they are continually improving their software, and they listen to their customers.

It's used for recurring billing for one of our clients. The organization uses it to manage their subscription billing, as well as their general day-to-day billing needs. It addresses issues involving storage of sensitive data and PCI compliance, as well as provides a catch-all solution for billing without in-depth integration.
  • Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliance
  • Recurring billing
  • Security
  • API documentation
  • Pricing
  • Native clients (e.g., Python)
Where recurring billing and subscriptions are primary concerns, Recurly is a cut above the rest.
  • Offloads issues regarding storage of sensitive data to a 3rd party, thus lessening the burden of PCI compliance without sacrificing security.
  • Stripe
Recurly offers a better and more robust API. Recurring billing is much more complex with Stripe than with Recurly. For small dollar amount transactions, Recurly typically makes more sense for our clients than Strip does.
It's inexpensive (relatively), it's robust, and it's already in our system. Three good reasons why changing to an alternative would be more costly.
