An indispensable tool for comparing and syncing data in Microsoft SQL databases.

My small web development team uses Redgate SQL Data Compare to help us manage our SQL databases across different environments (development, QA, and production, etc.). It eliminates the tedious and manual task of comparing databases and synchronizing them across these different environments.
  • Simple and easy comparison of database data. Differences can be copied or synced from one database to another with a click of a button.
  • You can save "projects" so that you can easily rerun a previous comparison whenever you need to.
  • It has a very simple, easy to learn interface. I've never needed to read any documentation or watch any tutorials in order to figure out how to do something.
  • It would be cool if you could write your own custom SQL query to use for selecting what data you want to compare.
  • I haven't looked to see if there's a way to do this or not, but it would be nice if you could programmatically run a saved project to sync data from one database to another.
If you maintain different copies of the same database (whether on the same server or on different servers) this is a must have tool. For example, in web development, it's common to have a development database, a testing/QA database, and a production database. This tool makes it easy to compare those different databases for any differences and synchronize changes and data between them. Now, when you deploy a new set of features to production, you can use this to deploy any accompanying database changes. However, if your application includes code that manages the database (for example, a new module or feature might include code to apply related database schema changes when it's installed), then this tool might not be necessary.

Redgate SQL Data Compare: a tool every DBA needs in their kit

I primarily use Redgate SQL Data Compare when troubleshooting issues to determine what has changed in a database between two times. It is great for ad-hoc troubleshooting, then recovering from the issue.
  • Provides many options for setting the comparison key
  • Provides flexibility about what you are comparing (database, backup, scripts)
  • Makes it easy to filter down to just what you are looking for
  • Would be cool if it could read transaction logs to find what caused the change
I think every DBA needs a tool like Redgate SQL Data Compare for day-to-day work and troubleshooting of issues.

Redgate SQL Data Compare and its Analysis

Redgate SQL Data Compare compares data fast enough and gives the similarities and the differences in the data between the sources. I enjoy this tool for comparing between staging environment and development environment data within the tables and deploying the changes between environments. Once this has been done, I can also deploy changes into the production after the approval from the management. It is a very handy tool for the Redgate suite to identify the data matches between environments in SQL server releases.
  • This tool is easy to use for comparing data in the database, whether it could be a code in procedures or the actual data in the tables. With this tool, we can identify the changes from moving data between environments.
  • We can reduce the time spent capturing changes in the data between environments like development, staging, and production, and move data very easily in an efficient way. This is a time saver tool.
  • We can export the compared SQL data into the different file formats for references. We can also move the changed captured SQL data from one environment to another.
  • Redgate SQL Data Compare is a bit slow for large text data comparison between the text fields of tables when compared to enabling SQL search engine.
  • Sometimes some characters haven't been identified and compared when comparing data between two environments.
  • It needs better customer support for utilizing the tool, and cost factor also matter.
This tool is suitable for comparing data in small to medium database environments. It is very handy for capturing changes and moving the data between environments. It is convenient when exporting the data changes into different format files. This tool is easy to understand. Tool performance decreases if database size grows from TB to several TB of data compared along with a lot of text data.

A Perfect Data Compare for SQL Databases

Score 10 out of 10

I actually use Redgate Data Compare every day a long time, this software used with his "brother" SQL Compare (used to compare DB structures) forms the winning pair for fast and simple control of DB and data structures (intended for each record, column by column) between different environments of development.
  • Very fast data comparison even on complex tables
  • Simple and intuitive use
  • Speed in compiling data alignment scripts
  • Requires version upgrade if you upgrade SQl Server
  • Some features or additional feature are hidden among the option's flags
  • License fee slightly high
If you plan to use Redgate Data Compare to automate data change between tables or SCD or similar, this is not the software that is right for you, Data Compare is a software that performs simply (but in an optimal manner) the comparison of data between tables of different databases on different environments or clone or mirror databases even on the same environment or server. Once the data is compared, you can select or deselect each line you want to update and then have the data alignment script prepared for it.

REDGATE SQL Backup for everyone

Score 10 out of 10

Redgate is used by the entire organization to Backup and Recover Microsoft SQL Servers hosted on HyperV and Physical Hosts.

It solved our business need for solid SQL Server Backups, Retention Policies, and De-duplication via Advanced Compression. It also provided a great Centralized Management of the SQL Server Environment. I would highly recommend it.
  • It provided a Great Centralized Management Console. User can go to the Console to manage all of their Redgate Licenses and also configure SQL Server Backups.
  • It does an excellent job at managing the SQL Backup and Compressing the backup file to allow for easy transport to DR Locations.
  • It has great options for SQL Server Backup Jobs including copying to secondary storage locations.
  • Better License Management would be an improvement. Currently no way to manage your licenses without contacting your representative.
  • Possibly better testing of backups would an improvement. Ability to restore files in a Sandbox would be a great feature.
Redgate SQL Backup is well suited for use in large and small organizations. It is scalable to needs of a large organization as they expand their footprint. Some of their other products such as the SQL Toolbelt and the Redgate SQL Monitor are also extremely beneficial. Organizations with low bandwidth between interconnects will benefit from the compression feature.
