What is SAP Business ByDesign?

SAP Business ByDesign (ByD) is a cloud enterprise resource planning software (Cloud ERP) that is sold and operated as software as a service (SaaS) by SAP SE. It is designed for small to medium-sized enterprises as well as subsidiary businesses. The software is designed to provide business processes across application areas from financials to human resources with embedded business analytics, mobility, e-learning, and support.

SAP Business ByDesign is built on the principles of a service-oriented architecture (SOA). The underlying technology is leveraging SAP's in-memory HANA database.

A comprehensive set of prepackaged integrations as well as SOAP and oData webservices ensure easy integrations to other SAP or non-SAP applications.

Updates are delivered automatically four times a year with no IT staff required.

We use it to hire and terminate employees. We also use it for all of our accounting, finance, process orders, sales, opportunities, client invoices, and suppliers invoices. We also use to manage our projects. We create projects (regular projects, maintenance projects, warranty projects) and we also use it for our inventory and stock of parts/spare parts. We also use it to enter time and process our business expense reports. Finally, we use it to keep track of our time off requests for vacation or sick time.

SAP Business ByDesign has improved our operations decreasing the time to close accounting periods and monthly reports. Mainly we implemented SAP ByDesign to replace old legacy systems. Now, we are working on our finance and logistics processes integrated and avoiding reprocess and lack of information. Our users are increasing their skills from day to day.

[It's a] Full business management tool, used to integrate all departments into a single system. My department uses it for sales, both as a CRM tool and pipeline management. The entire organization uses the same platform for various functions. It addresses the issue of siloed information. It allows users to access a variety of information (service calls, pending orders, sales opportunities, financial balances, etc) with user controlled permissions.

We are using SAP ByDesign across our whole business. We needed a product that was fully integrated, from its CRM functions to project management, timesheeting, invoicing and reporting.

Previously we were using a separate accounting system (MYOB), a CRM (Zoho), a timesheeting application (Timepro), a project management solution (Smartsheet). These caused massive data consistency issues with replication, invalid data and problems with billable time falling between the cracks. With SAP ByDesign we can get awesome reporting from the solution that is real-time. The value this represents is massive now that the company has more that 30 consultants.

We implemented SAP BYD to improve out quote to cash process. We used consultants to help with the implementation, which was very helpful, but did not mean we got it right the first time. Once the software was implemented, and we were able to get data out of the system, we were really able to get the benefits of the software. It has improved tracking of transactions. It has provided transparency into open transactions that should be closed. SAP has allowed the company to have one source of truth. It has allowed us to have one customer name that all departments use to book time and expenses against as well as support and service request. The biggest cons were the CRM functionality - the sales team went back to Salesforce, the multiple steps for approvals, and the multiple steps needed to enter an expense report. In addition, the mobile app for submitting expense reports is less than excellent.
