It is used as a spatial data warehouse and spatial analysis tool.
  • Fast execution of spatial queries
  • Simplified management of spatial data
  • Pre-integrated connectivity to other SAP and third party products
  • Image processing and analysis
  • Support for more spatial data formats in ETL processes
  • More advanced spatial analysis tools
Best suited for enterprise-scale spatial data management and analysis, where multiple spatial systems or databases exist in silos.
Too expensive for project level analysis and lacks advanced spatial analysis tools as well as support for more spatial data formats for ingestion.
  • Consolidation or sometimes elimination of multiple spatial data management tools.
  • Enabled spatial analysis too impractical to perform on other platforms.
  • Pre-integration with other SAP and non-SAP tools improves business processes
Oracle and SQL Server, spatial. HANA is not as mature in some areas but since it supports over 80% of the use cases it makes sense to use it as the main spatial platform and use the others as sidecars where needed.
Outstanding online support and communities.

Consulting across multiple business functions and industries

Some level of database knowledge for cloud, much more varied IT skills for on prem. Some level of SQL in both cases.
  • Consolidation of spatial data
  • Fast execution of spatial queries
  • Integration with other SAP products.
  • Running large spatial analysis tasks not practical on other platforms
  • Use for image analysis when fully supported
It is the best product for an SAP environment and often for non-SAP shops as well
No

  • Prior Experience with the Product
Been involved in HANA (spatial features) since its beginning.
I would start with the assumption that HANA is the standard and put the burden of proof on other platforms.
  • Implemented in-house
No
Change management was a minor issue with the implementation
People are not comfortable with changing from something they know and poses no risk to something that is unfamiliar with risk. They must be converted by clearly demonstrating how their job will be easier and expanded.
  • Data quality issues discovered during migration
  • Re-building interfaces to legacy apps
Professional GIS people are some of the most risk-averse there are, and it's difficult to get them to move to HANA in one step. Start with small projects building to 80% use of HANA spatial over time.
  • Formulating and running queries
  • Managing spatial data
  • Integration with other SAP and non-SAP products (Esri)
  • Getting spatial data into it
  • Geocoding
Well documented and good online training. Not a hard lift for someone with a basic knowledge of databases and SQL.
Yes, but I don't use it

It is being used by one department. As a developer (ABAPER) I am facing coding issues.
  • Faster than legacy.
  • Improved and dynamic.
  • Compatible.
  • Provide easy-to-do coding.
It is appropriate to work. For example, IRCTC is using HANA. It's not easily available for all users because of legacy systems on one want to switch to HANA. Everyone's first question is: why it is required to move to HANA? Also, it is very costly. Better solutions are available in the market at a lower price than HANA.
  • Takes time to migration during transition period.
  • Huge business effect because of less training and knowledge to users.
S/4HANA.
It's good R&D by SAP.

HANA pros and cons in BI

In my company I'm working in the SAP BW area. At the moment, I'm working on SAP HANA in a BW 7.5 on Hana per data warehouse and planning for a food company. We're working with Sap Hana to integrate the data from other systems (as actual data) and we've done a model of planning for P&L.
  • Sap Hana is very well for the "in memory" base, for performance and saving data in columns instead of rows.
  • Very helpful with the use of calculation view to develop the final solution and simplify the list of objects.
  • Developed directly on Hana Database, with the use of new objects such as calculation view, store procedures and several new objects.
  • Planning function and planning sequence, more new functionalities "standard" to allocation, for example.
  • Improve performance of analysis for office as the frontend.
  • Simplify the use of execution plan, plan view, and similar.
Hana is well suited for scenarios such as BI for manager data or enriching the data, and with objects as a calculation view. The developer can develop flow without ABAP or transformation (TRFN) but only use "virtual" data on the fly mode to avoid duplicated data.
  • New projects for our clients are interesting to improve performance.
  • Positive impact on the use of BI and analysis for office.
  • Negative performance regarding the use of memory.
I'm working with SAP products only.
Hana has shown that it can improve performance regarding data loading, data manipulation, and enrichment.
In my opinion, it has to improve in terms of frontend performance and better management of backend memory in some cases

My HANA Experience

I work for a hosting service provider. I focus mainly on the maintenance of SAP HANA for clients but we also use it as our internal monitoring tool.
  • The data analytics the solution provides is very detailed.
  • Fast processing.
  • Better support , sometimes the releases HANA versions or SP are not very stable
It would be well suited for organizations using OLAP (Online Analytical Processing) and OLTP (Online Transactional Processing) products.
  • Reporting is much faster than our old solution manager, we've seen improvement in response time.
I have not tried a similar product, we mainly work with SAP technology.
HANA versions that are released sometimes are buggy. More testing before releasing SP would be helpful.

I use it in my role.
