What is Sauce Labs?

Sauce Labs is a cloud-based platform for automated testing of desktop and mobile applications. It is designed to be instantly scalable, since it is optimized for continuous integration workflows. (The vendor says that when tests are automated and run in parallel on multiple virtual machines across many different browser, platform and device combinations, testing time is reduced and developer time is freed up from managing infrastructure.) The Sauce Labs testing cloud is intended to be paired with a CI system. According to the vendor, this combination allows developers to easily test desktop and hybrid, native and mobile web applications early on in their development cycles, continuously and affordably.

Sauce Labs provides enterprise-grade security via Sauce Connect™, its secure tunneling protocol for testing behind a firewall while maintaining control of proxy and access policies. Tests are run in the company’s secure data center and VMs are destroyed (not “wiped”) after each run, ensuring customer data is never exposed to future sessions. After tests are completed the Sauce Labs’ dashboard provides a unique build-oriented report with metadata, access to Selenium logs, screenshots, video recordings, and a complete list of commands and responses. Support for SSO lets customers provision new user accounts on the fly with centralized user account management, access control, and usage reporting.

One of the key advantages of Sauce Labs is its ability to provide an extensive range of real devices for testing, including both Android and iOS devices. This feature allows users to test their mobile applications on actual devices and ensures that the app performs flawlessly on the targeted devices.

Having used some of the competitor's tools over the year I would say that SauceLabs provides a lot of value for money if you plan to run long sets of tests with high frequencies. Paying for a single slot means you can run tests whenever you want without creeping costs but it does make running tests in parallel require an extra slot. Currently, our test suite takes over three hours to run and at the moment it is cost prohibitive to purchase an extra slot. However, having access to live testing and integration with Appium is great.

Sauce Labs is well suited to multiple test environment scenarios, especially for testing in parallel. Sauce Labs is not well suited to customized test environments such as with specific operating system updates/hotfixes, software package installations with specific version requirements and / or environmental or usage configuration setup requirements.

Sauce Labs is well suited if your product works on different combinations of OS and browsers. It is easy to add new platforms and run the tests as needed. They are also on top of updating platform requirements as and when needed.

If your product does not have a lot of pages, Sauce Labs may not be the best fit for you.

Sauce Labs is perfectly suited for any company or organization that needs to test on closed-source browsers such as Internet Explorer, Safari, and MS Edge. In addition, it is ideal for users that need high availability of automation test infrastructure as the VMs are always available if they are not being used.

For cases related to remote access. For example, when employees are unable to come into work due to various reasons and mobile device testing needs to be performed. When the devices reside at the place of work, Sauce Labs provides a great solution where full device testing can still be done without losing testing time.

As previously mentioned in this Work from Home Era ,Saucelabs for device access and using it as an automated solution is vital to the tech industry as everyone knows Automation is the future and what the industry is pushing and having a growing tool such as this assists greatly

Well suited: You know which set of core devices you need as a company which would then become your private devices. Also the ability to swap devices for new ones annually is most useful and cost efficient. Other devices that are used less often can then be used from the public set of devices. Not quite suited for the scenario where speed and framerate are the utmost importance.

Again, as a Salesforce admin, there is nothing worse than creating a new validation rule or feature, testing it out in sandbox thoroughly, then rolling it out into production, only to discover that your testing didn't uncover a bug that stops the company from closing deals. This eliminates that completely, and in a way that is easily repeatable, and can be done in an instant. You essentially 'record' the steps you want to take to test a process, then you can replay it at any time after any changes have been made. No more testing the lead-to-op process a dozen times a quarter, with the click of a button, it's done.

I think it is well suited when you do not have access to the particular device. It is also good for hooking up automation suites and is fairly easy to do this with good documentation. I think it is less appropriate when you have the physical device you need for testing.

I can recommend Sauce Labs if we need to test if the given build is good or is working in all the browsers correctly. That means the scenario count is less than 10, so execution time does not matter here. But if we need to run a test suite with >100 then this is not suitable because it is 200% more time-consuming when compared to other web drivers.

Access to specific devices is good, as well as access to a specific browser/platform. We are not able to connect our dev environments to Sauce Labs because the devices are put in our VPC. Some versions are not available like iPhone with iOS 12.1. With iOS, there is limited/no support for push notifications without real devices due to Apple's provisioning profiles.

Sauce Labs is well suited for teams using Selenium-based testing flows, [which] need enterprise level support, and cross browser, cross-device testing management. SauceLabs is not for smaller teams that will not be [scaled] to support multiple generations of multiple browsers on multiple devices. However, if you are a small team and want to offload your entire selenium configuration to get rid of technical debt, it could be valuable there as well.

I would recommend Sauce Labs for web automation testing, period. Hands-down the easiest decision to make. Their Selenium support is great and they always keep browser support up-to-date. Documentation is great and always improving. The Sauce Configurator is essential for setting up specific browser or mobile device combinations. Sauce Labs also now supports Cypress, Puppeteer, and other test frameworks too. With API Fortress, AutonomIQ, Screener, BackTrace, and Appium/Real Device, they provide an integrated solution for testing everything, everywhere.
