What is ScienceLogic SL1?

The ScienceLogic SL1 platform aims to enable companies to digitally transform themselves by removing the difficulty of managing complex, distributed IT services. SL1 uses patented discovery techniques to find everything in a network, so users get visibility across all technologies and vendors running anywhere in data centers or clouds. The vendor states the advantage of SL1 is that it collects and analyzes millions of data points across an IT universe (made up of infrastructure, network, applications, and business services), to help users make sense of it all, share data, and automate IT processes.

With SL1, the user can:

  • See everything across cloud and distributed architectures. Discover all IT components—–across physical, virtual, and cloud. Collect, merge, and store a variety of data in a clean, normalized data lake.
  • Contextualize data through relationship mapping and machine learning (ML) for actionable insights. Use this context to understand the impact of infrastructure and applications on business service health and risk, accelerate root cause analysis, and execute recommended actions.
  • Act on data that is shared across technologies and IT ecosystem in real time. Apply multi-directional integrations to automate workflows at cloud scale.

ScienceLogic SL1 more cloud-oriented than Nagios. Product support is also very important for corporate users.
IBM Tivoli Monitoring is a relatively expensive solution that requires dedicated professional support and complex infrastructure.
Dynatrace is good for performance monitoring and analysis, but loses in price

We used BMC as our monitoring tool, and BMC True Sight for Capacity Management. SL1 is great in Event monitoring, but it lacks the Capacity Management features as it is not a Capacity Management Tool. It would be great if we can use it as a Capacity Management Tool with all the rich feature sets that BMC True Sight offers. One Tool that does it all!

In comparison to above tools specifically in terms of monitoring capabilities, ScienceLogic SL1 is way-way behind.

A lot of features which were available in these suites may be in 2010s are still not available in 2020s.

ScienceLogic SL1 may be good when it comes to Custom Integrations (possibly a downside in other Suites) but having to subscribe to Professional Services, makes even that complicated.

I was not part of the team selecting ScienceLogic SL1. Our goal was to increase event visibility in our server environment. We were using scripting which created many false events. SolarWinds is primarily used in the Network space to monitor network gear.

Agentless, easy, and powerful. Easy to deploy, maintain and manage. The one-stop solution replaces multiple monitoring tools, has an inbuilt ticketing system, and can be integrated with any tools. Easy to deploy any application monitoring via REST API calls. Dynamic applications have inbuilt rules to map default thresholds and alert policies, reducing the risk of failure.

ScienceLogic SL1 has great UI to configure any monitoring after setup, also has agent-less monitoring that's the great feature against mandate agent monitoring tool like ITM and Zabbix. ScienceLogic SL1 UI has great flexibility to configure any monitoring and modification as per requirements.

From a monitoring perspective, in my opinion, ScienceLogic SL1 meets if not exceeds in all areas. The two caveats are APM and Network Flow Analytics (NFA) where ScienceLogic SL1 does not have a native capability but does integrate well with the leading APM and NFA providers.

ScienceLogic SL1 has a greater understanding and maturity on what Infrastructure monitoring needs to be and has to include at a decent price point for what it offers compared to its competitors.

These are two different type's of products really that cross over each other at some intersections. Dynatrace is a Deep Diving monitoring tool as ScienceLogic monitors what can be seen on the surface, like logs, cpu memory, cpu and memory would be a crossover, and ScienceLogic would tell you about usage and Dynatrace could tell you how much each element was using.
