What is Skype?

Skype (the personal edition) is a free web meeting, video conferencing, and VoIP software. The free version includes instant messaging, audio and video Skype-to-Skype calls, the ability to call mobile phones and landlines, paid international calling, and conference calling capabilities for up to 25 people. During video sessions, users also have the option to share their screen with other participants. Other distinctive features include background blurring, voice and text translation, location share, conversation search, and integration with Microsoft's Digital Assistant, Cortana.

This version of Skype works on phones, desktop, tablet, browsers, Alexa, and Xbox. Users can call landlines and mobile phones from around the world by paying for Skype Credit or signing up for Skype subscriptions, a monthly contract for users who only need service to specific regions. Users can also pay to have a local phone number through Skype Numbers, so that they can answer phone calls from their desktops, tablets, or smartphones. They can also send SMS text messages and share their location using the Skype mobile app.

We use Skype in our organization to get connected at every time and at any place through this software as it helps us a lot in communicating and passing information from one person to another in no time. It is very less time-consuming and easy to use. Through the software, we do calling, chat and share files and images, videos, etc., on a single tip.

  • We can create different groups and can add a large number of people to the same group, which helps in spreading any news to masses
  • Skype need to add different templates which looks more attractive.
As I have experienced Skype and found that it helps us a lot in my professional and personal life. Through Skype, I can communicate with my colleague, clients, family, and friends from anywhere in the world. I can do Audio calls, video calls, screen sharing, and chatting with anyone. It is very remote-friendly software and acquires very less space in your mobile or system. It is user-friendly. I use it to share all the official documents and other files with another person through Skype, and it works very nicely and efficiently while transferring the data.

  • It has lowered our costs in our organization while communicating through the internal team, earlier we use landlines to communicate, but now we use Skype which is cheap in comparison to landlines and other sources.

As WhatsApp Business is not useful as skype because there are certain features which were not as useful as those available on skype. Whatsapp has a file size limit while transferring data, it doesn't have screen sharing which is a big drawback, and cannot be used as a professional tool while working in corporates.

Skype is exceptionally a great tool to connect with your coworkers while working. The best feature I have experienced is the screen sharing capability, which helps a lot with discussing your projects online and you can easily understand what the speaker wants to make you understand. You can make group calls, add members, and send an invite by scheduling your tasks to it. Hand raise and emoticons are also available to express your feelings over the chat. The UI is friendly and easy to manage and use. Privacy shortcuts are also available. It also allows muting the disturbance in a group call.

Customer support is really amazing. If you're stuck somewhere, you just need to communicate your problem and they will assist you so amazingly that you just need to sit and relax and the rest is done by the customer support team.

Skype offers various key features that meet our expectations when we connect virtually. I need to arrange webinars, feedback, one-on-one sessions, meetings online in which Skype helped me a lot as the call quality is excellent and it offers privacy security while connecting.

Skype is well suited in scenarios where one needs to speak with someone or a group of people that are in different locations. It works well internationally and across the US. It is less appropriate when users are in the same room, they should simply have a normal conversation in person rather than using Skype.

Skype is a great tool and it is better than the others, Zoom, GoToMeeting, Appear.in because it is widely used around the world. The other applications require new users to sign up and download software, where most people I work with already have Skype and are ready to go and have a meeting!
The overall support with Skype is excellent. I have not had many issues so it seems the support team is fixing issues before new users encounter them. It is best when you do not need to get in touch with the support team and the product works well out of the box as expected.

I used Skype at my old company. We loved the ability to IM, the Outlook calendar integration, the ability to meet on demand or schedule future meetings. The emoticons were hit for our emoji lovers. We used it across the entire company, in which we had both remote employees and those working at headquarters. It made conversations easier.

Skype is great for one-to-one, maybe one-to-5 ratio for communication. When you get many more folks in a room/on a phone call, there tends to be a lot of noise, literally and figuratively. Appropriate for smaller companies, <500 employees. Much more than that, and it becomes hard to manage.
