Community Insights

TrustRadius Insights are summaries of user sentiment data from TrustRadius reviews and, when necessary, 3rd-party data sources. Have feedback on this content? Let us know!

User-Friendly Interface: Users appreciate the SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer for its straightforward and easy-to-understand interface. They find it intuitive and user-friendly, even for new users with minimal training.

Real-Time Analysis and Support: The tool's real-time analysis capabilities and support services are highly valued by users. They mention that it helps them promptly identify and resolve performance issues in SQL databases, such as errors, long-running queries, or system-blocking problems.

Wide Range of Supported Databases: Users find the extensive range of supported databases to be a valuable feature of the tool. It allows them to monitor and analyze the performance of multiple databases from one centralized interface.

Dated and Confusing User Interface: Several users have expressed frustration with the user interface, describing it as dated, confusing, and difficult to navigate. They suggest that the user interface could be more user-friendly and have a reduced learning curve. Some users also mentioned that the navigation can be unintuitive and sometimes tough, and that some items can be confusing to find again. Overall, improvements in the cosmetic aspects of the user interface are needed.

Lack of Reporting Flexibility: According to some users, there is a lack of flexibility in both dashboard customization and reporting capabilities. They feel that the reporting feature needs improvement to provide more options for customization and analysis. This limitation hinders users' ability to obtain meaningful insights from their data.

High Cost: The cost of the software has been a major complaint among some users, particularly when it comes to adding additional instances. These users mention that the licensing timeline needs improvement as adding new instances becomes cost-prohibitive during certain periods of the year. The high cost associated with using this software can limit its accessibility for businesses operating on tight budgets.

Users highly recommend trying the free trial and evaluating SolarWinds DPA before purchasing. They suggest taking advantage of the free demo and training resources provided by SolarWinds. Users advise implementing SolarWinds DPA for monitoring and analyzing databases, especially for those who are just learning. The software is also recommended for DBAs in small to medium businesses and for integrating with other SolarWinds products for better data analysis. Additionally, users suggest comparing it with Idera offerings for SQL performance monitoring and highlighting it to DBAs as they will likely find value in it.

We actually never tried other products. After some research, SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer seemed the best match for our needs, and we were happy after the trial period, so we kept it.

DPA is a market leader and goes beyond what most products in the space can offer. It's a battle between SQL Sentry and DPA for the lead and everybody has their favorite. I personally prefer DPA for ease of install, management and better tuning and query advice options.

Quest Spotlight had a 70-page installation manual - quite daunting. SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer, on the other hand, is pretty straightforward to install and use. I'm looking forward to exploring SQL Sentry but haven't gotten far into it yet.

Overall DPA is the best tool that I have used because of its simple interface and ability to dig in within a few clicks to see the root of a performance issue, but Idera and SQL Sentry have some areas where they are better than DPA, such as blocking and deadlocks.
I also feel the Idera tool has a slight edge over DPA when it comes to recommendations for improvements.

SolarWinds is much more intuitive and really helpful as a starting point for our monitoring purposes.
Even the junior level colleagues can really make sense of the systems which could be facing any potential issues and act accordingly. It also provides some guidance towards what potentially is the problem, which helps to take further actions too. Oracle EM is obviously built with more features and can do much more, but needs a level of expertise and understanding to basically use it across the landscape.

At the time of evaluation, this product was similar in terms of cost but DPA was far better to access query performance issues which were the most important aspect for us. Redgate at the time was heavier on resource monitoring which was less important at the time.

We were a long-time user of Database Analyzer even before it was acquired by SolarWinds. We did look at other applications in the past. As it has been a long period, its not beneficial to mention here. We have seen some other options like from Microsoft and Oracle which are limited.

Our organization has not compared SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer with any other products. We selected SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer for the simple fact that we use other SolarWinds products, and we wanted a solution that both compliments and integrates with our other monitoring solutions.
SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer was the only product that met both of those requirements.

We have evaluated AppDynamics and Datadog along with Solarwinds DPA and definitely the winner is SolarWinds. We have been using it for the past 5 years. It has better alert functionality and is easy to use while providing great analytics.

We use both DPA and Red Gate SQL Monitor (SQM) as third-party tools, and Query Store within SSMS. SQM's alerting and reporting capabilities exceed those of DPA in terms of being able to present single-purpose tiles for a server, where excessive smoothing doesn't hide some important detail. The SQM Estate page is particularly useful for space management and patching. DPA excels at query and table pinpointing - we see these tools as complementary. SQM is deployed for Production-only, whereas DPA is used for development through QA, UAT, and production.

Solarwinds DPA came with a 30-day trial. We used that to evaluate the product, and when a P1 incident occurred with no DBA available we installed another 30-day trial. Its performance was good enough that we bought it that day!

We didn't try any other similar product before making this decision, SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer was enough.
