Community Insights

TrustRadius Insights are summaries of user sentiment data from TrustRadius reviews and, when necessary, 3rd-party data sources. Have feedback on this content? Let us know!

User-Friendly Interface: Users appreciate the SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer for its straightforward and easy-to-understand interface. They find it intuitive and user-friendly, even for new users with minimal training.

Real-Time Analysis and Support: The tool's real-time analysis capabilities and support services are highly valued by users. They mention that it helps them promptly identify and resolve performance issues in SQL databases, such as errors, long-running queries, or system-blocking problems.

Wide Range of Supported Databases: Users find the extensive range of supported databases to be a valuable feature of the tool. It allows them to monitor and analyze the performance of multiple databases from one centralized interface.

Dated and Confusing User Interface: Several users have expressed frustration with the user interface, describing it as dated, confusing, and difficult to navigate. They suggest that the user interface could be more user-friendly and have a reduced learning curve. Some users also mentioned that the navigation can be unintuitive and sometimes tough, and that some items can be confusing to find again. Overall, improvements in the cosmetic aspects of the user interface are needed.

Lack of Reporting Flexibility: According to some users, there is a lack of flexibility in both dashboard customization and reporting capabilities. They feel that the reporting feature needs improvement to provide more options for customization and analysis. This limitation hinders users' ability to obtain meaningful insights from their data.

High Cost: The cost of the software has been a major complaint among some users, particularly when it comes to adding additional instances. These users mention that the licensing timeline needs improvement as adding new instances becomes cost-prohibitive during certain periods of the year. The high cost associated with using this software can limit its accessibility for businesses operating on tight budgets.

Users highly recommend trying the free trial and evaluating SolarWinds DPA before purchasing. They suggest taking advantage of the free demo and training resources provided by SolarWinds. Users advise implementing SolarWinds DPA for monitoring and analyzing databases, especially for those who are just learning. The software is also recommended for DBAs in small to medium businesses and for integrating with other SolarWinds products for better data analysis. Additionally, users suggest comparing it with Idera offerings for SQL performance monitoring and highlighting it to DBAs as they will likely find value in it.

Companies can't remove reviews or game the system. Here's why

  • It is not uncommon to identify a query that is taking 70 seconds and reduce it to under a second. It sounds crazy, but it is true.
  • Improving a SQL bottleneck benefits more than just one specific use case! Overall responsiveness of the application improves.

  • It has allowed us to progress as an organization with much less reliance on a direct DBA than would traditionally be required
  • Allowed us to be much more proactive in our performance monitoring and responding to issues that would affect users.

  • Preventing problems rather than reacting to them is priceless. Our level of customer service shot way up.
  • I'm sure that DPA played a part in this - the gruff head of Development chewed out my boss when he heard I was leaving the company to accept another opportunity elsewhere- 'How can you let the best DBA we've ever had go?' The level of service I could provide using SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer helped me be that excellent DBA.

  • Not my current employer, but a previous one. We had a deployment of a large amount of code, including numerous database changes. The next day, everything that depended on that database server was down and the server was slammed to 100% CPU, RAM, and I/O. It would have been very difficult to identify exactly what was wrong, but it took only seconds to pull up Database Performance Analyzer and find the exact problem, and then less than a minute to patch the exact proc that had a problem. The whole company was locked out of business-critical sites and tools, and it could have taken hours to analyze the issue by means like traces, DMVs, etc. Instead, it took almost no time at all.

  • I cannot provide quantitative data, but can give you some real positive impact example .
  • We had several points in the Internet banking applications which do not work as well as desired. Using DPA we identified the heaviest SQL queries and initiate a change request to the vendor. After implementing the received changes we are able to reduce response time by an order of magnitude.

  • DPA allows our DBA to be more agile and find solutions to SQL problems faster. This results in better service to our end users, and better performance on the EHR system to our providers, allowing them to complete chart service for a patient much faster.

  • When we started, my database administrator was quite defensive. Database Performance Analyzer does not lie, we had many issues in our environment. The database would lock every morning at 3 AM when a purge job was running. Over time and analysis from the tools, we mitigated the locks on the database. We found out that there were 3 jobs running that choked performance. When we staggered the jobs, there was absolutely no impact on the users during the purge job.
  • Database Performance Analyzer is like having another full-time employee on your staff, but it works 24X7 365 days a year! It is worth every penny for the purchase and maintenance. We have become proactive rather than reactive. My boss was running a couple of queries against the database. The 10-minute interval went from a cumulative 60 seconds of wait time per 10 minutes to over 1100 minutes of wait time in a 10-minute interval. Because of the monitor on the wall, we took action, drilled down to the machine, and immediately identified that it was our administration causing the database to potentially affect the end-users. I picked up the phone and told my boss that their computer was having an impact on the database. They quickly stopped their process and the database statistics quickly went back to normal. This has happened a couple of times.
  • I have to admit, we lost our first database administrator. Database Performance Analyzer in your environment when properly managed can also point out a weakness in your staff. Failing to use the tools will result in termination!!!! I can't help lazy!

  • I definitely receive value from this product. Before DPA, I could not easily pinpoint why my SQL Server was slow at any given point in time.
  • The graphs and trending also help me visualize where problems are and fix and address them much more quickly.

  • The only negative impact so far has been on the security front. We spent the last few days trying to tighten restrictions and access.
  • It's very costly per number of databases. I would change the pricing model or offer a site license at a discount.

  • Faster output with help of SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer.
  • No need to buy the whole server product if you need only database-related monitoring.
  • You can monitor multiple environments, so that is a plus.
  • Only negative thing is they are the best in market but still cannot get some features like their competitors in SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer quickly.

  • Paid for itself in days. We had a stored procedure that could not meet its SLA, DPA highlighted the issue and contributed to the resolution.
  • We had a stored procedure that we were able to calculate as running in 9 milliseconds, unfortunately, we had transactions coming in 7 milliseconds, resulting in duplicate transactions, indicating that a mutex function was needed.

  • Was able to identify issues that we were able to take to one of our partners and improve the system for all users.
  • Identified an issue with storage that was also impacting other users, speeding the route to solving the problem.
  • Saves countless hours vs trying to pull these stats out of SQL server by hand. Being able to quickly find the source of the issue we are experiencing is invaluable.

  • Has definitely had a positive impact. It is one stop for all database monitoring for our global teams to identify any potentials issues or bottlenecks.
  • Very intuitive, so do not really have to spend too much time training people to use this tool.
