What is SolarWinds NPM?

SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM) delivers comprehensive network fault monitoring and performance management that scales and expands with a company's network monitoring needs. Users can collect and view availability, real-time and historical statistics from routers, switches, firewalls, servers, and any other SNMP-, ICMP-, or WMI-enabled devices directly from a web browser.

The vendor states that SolarWinds users can get a full NPM installation up and running the same day they download, and that implementation does not require a team of consultants. SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM) is quite an extensive product, covering all our bases and requirements. There are a lot of customizable options and features which you can work with for their alerting which is really useful. I haven't found anything yet which I thought SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM) could do, but it actually couldn't so overall it works nicely and does the job.

SolarWinds fulfilled all my requirements for network monitoring. I have added multiple vendor switches, Router, Firewalls, L1 switch for ICMP, and all are easy add-in tools for monitoring. This allows for easy SNMP configuration. SolarWinds has real-time monitoring and we can customize the polling interval as per our choices.

I would give it a 10 if it was easy to setup SMS or the tool to get it working was built in. But this is a serious detriment to the product. IT is 24/7 for us and having a node down during off hours can be critical. We have users in our organization who work differing hours and we have some critical departments every day 24 hours. Having an IT staff that is only working on a day shift requires the on-call person to be able to get notifications via SMS

GUI is very good and easy to understand as a new user. Alerts mechanism and alert triggers are good and support SMS and email. Features like NETPATH helps to trace packets easily. Network mapping is good, but still needs lots of improvement. Report system is a bit tricky. Mostly, NPM discovers all the attached devices if it is already there in the template.

The interface is so intuitive that I don't usually give a tutorial on how to use it. I just point IT folks to the front page URL and give them the guest account credentials. From there, they can just poke around and learn/discover as they go. You quickly realize you can click on pretty much anything (devices, interfaces, circuits, etc.) and get a whole new screen with detailed information. It's very straightforward.

It's easy to use at first. But, when you would either like to go technical OR trying to add a custom monitor the ease of use goes out the door and requires a lot of time to learn its SDK / Back-end tools.

Way too much emphasis on user to user support via their Thwack site. Skimping on support cost much? It's slightly disheartening to get better support from other customers then from the "success center" or calling support. Really hurts the ease of use for the product, because its fine until things don't work out of the box, then it gets frustratingly difficult.
