We use Serv-U to assist with large file transfers for one of our clients. It facilitates the interchange of data between our personnel and theirs.
  • User/profile management.
  • FTPS over the web.
  • SFTP over the SSH protocol.
  • The user interface on large screens becomes tiny and nearly unreadable without the aid of Windows Magnifier.
  • Active Directory integration is either absent or not straightforward.
  • Settings and configuration aren't always intuitive.
Great as a secure FTP server accessible to clients both via command line or web browser.
  • Crucial for intercompany file transfers.
  • Trustworthy system that comes up every time after server reboots without fail.
  • Must keep paying yearly maintenance fees.
Serv-U supports a highly configurable FTPS server over HTTPS, something OpenSSH does not.
The technicians over the phone demonstrate that they are willing and able to help. They're proactive, and they're actually interested and knowledgeable about their product. I'm most impressed by how tenacious they are when tracking down a problem reported with their software, even though Serv-U may not be at fault.

We print about 180 Newspapers for Customers in more than one State. The Dedicated FTP server is running Serv-U, currently with one domain and 212 users. This is primarily used for our customers to send in their PDF files for us to use in printing their newspapers. We also use it to disseminate useful information and "tips and tricks" using a virtual path that all customers can access.
  • The Wizard allows us to create new user accounts very easily and quickly. We do not have a formal IT department so those of us "mere mortals" can use this easily.
  • Using the Web Client has made it very simple to set up and instruct our customers on getting to the server from any device with a minimum of fuss. We have many customers with ESL, and school students including middle and high school. Most of them are not computer experts, just regular users so the simplicity allows to do the whole setup over the phone in minutes.
  • The newer version of Serv-U does not appear to be very resource-hungry so our computer runs nice and fast, without having to be a top of the range powerbox. We concentrated on large storage to cope with the file sizes we receive daily.
  • To be honest, as a regular user and not an IT professional, I can't think of anything else I need Serv-U to do for me.
For anyone who needs to receive/send files between themselves and others, in an organized fashion, I would strongly recommend Serv-U as a great tool at a sensible cost. In our line of work, we can get several customers signed in at once, each sending in hundreds of Megabytes of data simultaneously. Serv-U has never struggled with this. We don't use the Quota set up for sending/receiving data but I can see it is useful where an exchange of information is the point.
  • Prior to Serv-U installation, customers either emailed files which was very messy (large numbers of rejected transmissions due to file sizes being over the limit) or drove in and dropped off files on "disk" of some sort. Newspapers were sent to us with a single page PDF attached to each of multiple emails (up to 36 pages for some). Serv-U reduced our workload by at least 80% in terms of the time spent gathering the customer's pages for our PrePress system to work on.
Serv-U was the first FTP Management software we have installed and used. It is the only one we have used.
I have had so few problems with Serv-U that it is hard to rate this any more accurately. The support I have had has been excellent.

One is the Operations Manager (myself), the other two are Pre-Press Technicians who take the incoming file and process it into printing plates so our newspaper press can print the newspapers.

Our IT has implemented SolarWinds Serv-U for both internal use as well as use by departments outside of IT. Internally it's used when working with other vendors to provide a more secure way to transfer large files, while other departments are using it to transfer files too large to email.
  • Implementation was easy.
  • No problems managing it so far.
  • Love the desktop client.
  • Uses Java.
  • Cost for licensing was expensive.
  • Support is a hassle at times.
SolarWinds Serv-U is perfect for departments who call all the time because their emails bounce due to large file size. The desktop icon allows them to send the files with no interaction from us, allowing us to work on more pressing issues.

Active Directory integration could definitely use some improvement. This was the biggest hindrance while implementing for us.
  • Free up IT time for other issues.
  • Less emails bounced due to size thanks to the desktop client.
  • Budget took a hit due to licensing costs.
The overall interface of SolarWinds Serv-U was better in my opinion than that of Cerberus. We had several outside users demo both and the SolarWinds desktop client was the selling point for them. Both had an option, but SolarWinds was more user friendly, which was a big plus. Everything else was pretty close between the two.
Support was the biggest hurdle for us. It definitely needs improvement, but not to the point of being a deal breaker.

Serv-U is being used across many departments within the organization. Both internal employee and our customers are leveraging the FTP solution. This product replaced another FTP server which failed and required constant attention from IT staff. This solution allows remote administration from within the network while staying in security compliance.
  • Once configured, daily administration is simple.
  • Supports many FTP protocols SFTP, FTPS, and TFTP.
  • LDAP is difficult to configure.
  • Improve LDAP integration.
I believe that SolarWinds Serv-U is well suited for small to medium businesses that do not require an expensive high-end FTP server. Also, once the server is configured the daily administration can be handled by less experienced IT personnel. In my opinion this product may not be the right solution a large enterprise with heavy FTP traffic.
  • Feel the ROI is good because solution just works.
  • Many solutions make promises and do not live up to them, but Serv-U fits its purpose great.
Previously we have used FileZilla and Microsoft FTP services, but neither out-performed Serv-U. although it was easy to use, FileZilla required constant attention from IT staff and did not live up to security protocol in place. The Windows Server FTP was difficult to configure for clients due to the tight integration with Active Directory. This also limited who could help administer the server.
In my experience the Serv-U support and overall SolarWinds support is satisfactory. It did take a few calls and emails back and forth from the support team to work out some of my questions. In the end the support team was able to get the right answer to my configuration related questions.
