I needed a good local lab environment that replicated our server environment but without using a noisy rack server layout. In a data center, the Supermicro servers are fine but in an office environment, I needed a quieter compute setup that would allow me to install VMware-related licensing from VMUG. The Workstation provides all of the compatibility needed with VMware so I can test newer versions of software that are beta and may be buggy. The local environment is preferred because I may be doing multiple Operating System reloads over the weekend or finding code that is too unstable and reverting back to previous stable versions.
  • provides VMware compatability
  • is relatively quiet
  • has a good layout and doesn't produce too much heat
  • very stable but would be nice to get more updated redfish
  • more API's needed for the bios
  • better end user documentation
In a lab environment and for power users looking for server-related operating system compatibility but without using an actual rack server layout, works great. As a primary workstation for power users works great as well.
  • Flexibility
  • Ability to use alternative parts
  • Great hardware support
  • Workstation is not taking costly DC space
