Companies can't remove reviews or game the system. Here's why

Used mainly internally to survey usage and satisfaction with the organization's system, mainly around training and knowledge. Also, from time to time, to survey customers satisfaction.
  • Easy to build from scratch, the wizard approach takes you through steps.
  • Easy to collect answers: a really easy way to distribute the survey as needed.
  • Quick analysis as responses are sent because managers want 'early results,' so having the statistics nicely ready right away is good.
  • UI is too loaded; there's a mix of the functions, "added value" info (like tips and benchmark data) and upgrades offered.
  • Speed of the site could be better. Not that it is extremely slow, but if work a lot with the site, it might be painful.
  • Although the wizard approach for building surveys A-Z is great, it would also be great to have a shortcut to build and send short "quick and dirty" surveys.
Lately, we send customers satisfaction surveys. SurveyMonkey was a good tool for that, as all the requirements were met (question types, distributing, collecting the data, the ability to turn the collector on/off, and download the numbers to an XLS file). What we were missing though, is the option to send the same questions in different languages in a way that collect responses regardless of the language the survey is written in.

  • In our case, there is no direct impact. We just found it beneficial to have a rather basic paid plan and have it handy whenever we have to collect feedback and opinions after some effort.
I once tried the survey feature of SharePoint (2010). It was far too complicated to build the survey, I didn't even get to the distribution options. So, even though we pay for SP, we still pay also for SurveyMonkey too. I know Google Forms is an easy to use and cheap (not to say free) and recently upgraded to now has many of the features SM has, but it still doesn't have as many options and generally feel less mature. It seems the gap between SM and Google is most felt in the survey management, e.g. the dashboard SM has. So if you run a few surveys at any given moment or create and oversees surveys frequently, SM will serve you better. If you need only a few surveys in a year, Google might be enough.
  • Allowing other access to the responses data, even if they don't have a SM account.
  • Adding logo and other branding items.
The interface it too packed with info and promotions. there isn't a clear distinction between the task-related components on the screen, and upgrade promotions, tips etc. much noise.

We're using SurveyMonkey to collect some quick user feedback for two departments working on a beta version of a new feature for our web-based subscription product.
  • If you use the pre-scripted questions, you are setting yourself up for success. Among the biggest problems faced by people with no research experience who want to do some research is a total lack of understanding of how to ask questions in a survey. By providing pre-screened, expert-crafted questions, SurveyMonkey has provided an end run around that problem.
  • Someone with no technical or analytical background whatsoever can handle SurveyMonkey just fine. Requires zero technical savvy and the analysis function is pretty much push-button, so you can find yourself with useful data even if you are a complete newbie to research (but you should stick with SurveyMonkey's prewritten questions - see above.)
  • Unlike other survey software, SurveyMonkey's Basic version (free) is quite robust and can provide useful results to a simple question set.
  • SurveyMonkey has recently discontinued a feature that allowed the survey sponsor to offer a prize to a randomly selected respondent. My recent experience with the feature was pretty bad: our 'contest' ended abruptly, with no advance warning or permission requested from us before SurveyMonkey decided to close the contest and tell us that we had to award the prize. Obviously there were issues with this feature, but pulling it instead of fixing it isn't doing a service to your users. UPDATE: contest feature appears to have been discontinued.
  • Bad customer communication on the contest feature; we had to email two different entities (SurveyMonkey) and a mysterious 'prize partner' to try and resolve the contest issue, which was not ultimately resolved to our satisfaction, nor were we refunded the cost of the upgrade.
  • SurveyMonkey could stand to do a better job educating users about WHY they need to ask questions with such care. Assuming the tool is largely being used by people with little or no research experience, some context on how the wording of questions affects the data you collect could keep users from making mistakes by simply tinkering with language without understanding the potential consequences.
Do I need significant support from the survey provider? Do I need questions that are non-standard? If not, do I have anyone on the team who has research experience? If you answered yes to any of those, this may not be the best way for you to do research. Try hiring a research firm instead.
  • Early feedback has improved our ability to make rapid changes during the beta testing period. Because we had a team with research experience, our need for specific information that went beyond SurveyMonkey's prepared questions wasn't a liability. For less than $250, we got actionable information that is letting us improve the new feature now and allowing us to see what kinds of users had issues, and who really likes the feature as is.
I haven't used other survey platforms recently.
I think there's plenty of room for competition in this area, and after our recent disappointment with the prize feature, I might give SurveyGizmo a try. UPDATE: Other departments in our organization are using SurveyGizmo - so far, they have been satisfied with it.

SurveyMonkey is web-based and doesn't require software downloads or specialists to use it. Having a lead user with a research background is ideal but not essential.

Change management was minimal
No implementation required. SurveyMonkey is easy and intuitive for even a first-time user, so no change management was required when we starting using the tool.
  • N/A
Implementation not required.
  • Setting up and deploying a survey could take less than half an hour, depending on the complexity of your survey
  • The "Analyze" function is simple enough to be operated by a chimpanzee
  • Reports are easily shareable and simple to read
  • None, really.
Useability is one of SurveyMonkey's strong points. Made for the non-researcher to be successful at research.

We started using just the free version of SurveyMonkey about three years ago just to collect basic information. Although question functionality was limited and you could only collect a limited amount of responses that solution worked great for that start-up period of the company. After a year of the free version we needed to collect survey data from a much larger audience and decided to upgrade to the Select package. The price is extremely reasonable for what you get and great for small companies. With the small investment of just around $200 per year we've been able to collect extremely valuable customer data from surveys to help shape the decisions we make for our product and as an organization. I would highly recommend SurveyMonkey to all companies, start with the free version and you'll be hooked. It's a great solution and with a minimal investment you'll be quite pleased with the results.
  • Provides a clean end-user experience for the person taking the survey.
  • Provides detailed reporting even at the lowest paid level
  • Provides an easy to use interface for building a survey
  • I would like to see more conditional question options, but I believe that's available in higher paid subscriptions
  • It would be nice to customize urls for survey distribution.
In my opinion SurveyMonkey is best suited for smaller organizations collecting responses from up to 3000 people (that's the most we've ever done at least). I would imagine the higher subscriptions could accommodate more. The best part about SurveyMonkey is the fact that you can truly try it free before you buy it or just keep using the free version depending on your survey needs.
  • We've been able to generate great business intelligence on customer needs for shaping features we deploy in our product
  • Customer feedback on our user events has helped us improve our user events to deliver a better attendee experience
We will continue to renew SurveyMonkey as it's an excellent tool for collecting customer data. The user interface is intuitive and we can share the log in information with virtually anyone in the company and they can easily create and analyze surveys for their department needs. SurveyMonkey is just a great fit for our organization.
