We are using Suse Linux on several of our virtual machines. It is supporting the virtual layer that hosts our application and web servers. It's easy to install and configure. We were not a fan of Suse Linux a few years back, but now Suse Linux has reached a level where it is officially supported by lots of vendors. For example, Oracle Database was officially supported only on RHEL and Oracle Linux. It is also now supported on Suse Linux.

Our implementation of Suse Linux was smooth. We configured a template for our organizational needs and then used it to deploy on multiple machines. The Auto YaST package makes automated installation convenient.
  • It can be installed on Enterprise Servers, Mainframes, Workstations as well as desktop computers.
  • If you are using Oracle Database, Orarun Suse Package makes your Oracle Database deployment very easy.
  • We also loved the pricing model offered by Suse Linux.
  • I haven't really faced problems with Suse Linux. But one of our applications generates Excel and Word doc reports on the server. We had a little challenge making it work on Suse Linux, as Suse Linux doesn't support Windows utilities directly.
Suse Linux is specifically designed for enterprise servers, mainframes, and workstations. You can also install it on desktop computers for personal use. It is well suited in an environment where you have large scale implementation of Linux. Applying security patches or installing packages across systems is very easy.
  • Our Go-Live time was less than estimated. A good amount of credit goes to the ease of deploying Suse Linux on around 200 Virtual Machines we have.
  • We didn't have to train our system admins to learn Suse Linux.
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
We have been using RHEL in most of our other projects. We chose Suse Linux for their pricing model and ease of patching. There is no other major pros and cons of RHEL over Suse Linux and vice versa.
  • Automated package installation using the Auto YaST Package utility.
  • System Administration tasks and performance monitoring are easy.
  • Using Windows utilities on Suse Linux platform is a bit challenging.
For the breadth of services, features and overall performance, I believe Suse Linux is a great choice for any enterprise. It still has to grow a bit in areas like online help forums and documents, but we are pretty much satisfied with our choice.
