Talend Open studio is free and anybody can quickly ramp up and start working on it. We do not need to have strong ETL skills to start using it. Exploring the intricacies takes skill. Doing basic integrations is quite easy with Talend compared to Oracle Data Integrator or other ETL tools. We can deploy Talend applications/jobs on Weblogic or docker. Oracle Data Integrator is not easy to use compared to Talend.

Oracle JDeveloper for BPEL is a very nice tool, but way to expensive. It has a tight integration with Oracle DB and more advanced features.
JBoss ESB Developer studio is very, very close in terms of functionality, but again, expensive.

  • Informatica
Informatica has a limited number of components that you can use. This places a heavy limitation on the capabilities of Informatica. On the other hand, Talend allows you to create your own custom components using Java. For businesses that need to perform a wide variety of data operations, it can be quite useful to have the option of creating your own custom components to satisfy business needs.

I prefer to use Talend Open Studio over SQL Server Integration Services because of the ease of use and wider connection library opportunities. By leveraging Talend Open Studio we are able to connect to a much wider set of source data as well as rapidly designing and deploying solutions for ETL.

In terms of systems integration and ETL I have used SQL Server SSIS, SQL Server (Jobs, BCP, Procs, XP_CmdShell, etc.) and custom code using Microsoft .NET. While certain other technologies do have their place, in this realm Talend is consistently the better tool. It is a much better tool than SSIS in terms of usability, flexibility, development and testing. Also, while SSIS is MS centric, Talend offers the world. When weighed against .NET custom coding, Talend offers faster development and testing times, ad consistency to a large degree across processes.
