Read&Write is our primary literacy software. Our business is higher education and this software addresses our needs in terms of providing TTS and study tools for our students. We also recommend it as a speech recognition option for those not using Windows 11 and MacOS. Our user base is mostly students with disabilities but have seen uptake by our some of our international student population and non-disabled students.
  • Text-to-speech
  • study tools (highlights and collecting highlights
  • scanning and OCR (scan feature and screenshot reader
  • Voices for Windows (more natural)
  • Speech Recognition is hit and miss
  • Spell Check is in need of a bit of an update to bring it up to par with Grammarly
Read&Write is great for students that struggle with reading and studying. It really helps with comprehension and information retention. It does struggle to keep up with the rigors or writing at the post secondary level. Spell check lacks the ability to check grammar.

  • My role is to improve the success rate of students with disabilities and often after I introduce them to the software, i get the "where was this when i was in high school?" comment. Just with that comment i know that it's made a difference in that student's academic life.
  • I believe that the software is directly related to student retention
So far every interaction has ended with a positive outcome. Emails are returned in a timely manner and phone calls have been fruitful in terms of problem solving and even learning.
It's highly important for us to provide our students with the tools to be successful in their academic pursuits. Our college strives to set an example to our community and partners in the area of accommodations and accessibility services. Part of that is being able to provide our students regardless of need the tools be successful. We are a primarily a Microsoft shop, therefore the ease of activation with our institutional Microsoft account is very convenient.
I've always found Read&Write superior to Kurzweil and we do have a small volume/web license of K3000 for those students that have used it in the past and I am not able to convert them to Read&Write. Dragon is one of the Speech Recognition options. I lean towards using the Windows 11 Voice access feature as i find it superior to Read&Write in terms of accuracy. Dragon is reserved to those that need to build a custom vocabulary. I do show the Talk&Type feature in students are on Windows 10 or earlier.

They are college students with various disabilities. We also see a lot of usage from our international students and those who are ESL learners.

Currently I am the Assistive Technologist and provide the initial training to our students on the use of Read&Write and we have 2 Learning Strategists that meet with students and support them on helpful strategies that help them make efficient use of the software. Beyond that we have made several academic advisors and tutors aware of Read&Write to allow them to redirect the students to use for training.

We've been using Read&Write for over 20 years and don't foresee us moving away from it any time soon.

Read & Write is used with many of the dyslexic students. The cost of the software does limit the widespread use to all that actually need it.
  • automatically populates to screen
  • highlights words as it reads a passage
  • online dictionary
  • Cost is too prohibitive
  • I'm going to miss Fluency Tutor
  • downsize the pop up menu/bar
It's an amazing software that is so helpful for dyslexic learners.

  • It's been a game changer since 1999.
  • Wish it was a district purchase instead of based on # of students.
  • Wish the price was more reasonable.
Because I have to leave a voicemail. A call is always going to voicemail, and then I'd like a live chat available.
That would be nice.

Texthelp is used all across our school district, primarily with Read and Write. We use this tool with students to individually focus on and help support their reading and writing. In special education, the tools available especially assist with the specific needs of students. The Read and Write Chrome extension is great for our Chromebook 1:1 in the district, providing tools like text-to-speech, highlighting, and simplifying the task of reading. EquatIo has also been a newly adopted math tool that has been great in our district, especially with our 1:1 program.
  • The highlighting feature has been loved by our staff and allows students to identify items as they go along and read.
  • Text-to-speech has been an important tool in our special education classes and allows differentiation in general ed as needed.
  • EquatIo has replaced a tool that no longer exists, allowing our students to created equations and formulas in Google Docs.
  • There have been a few bugs when launching EquatIo that just need to be cleaned up to remove frustrations from staff while using.
  • Nothing else, it's a really simple to use tools that enhance learning and teaching!
Texthelp creates amazing tools that are great for schools and education, especially with students in special education classes or who have specific needs to assist their learning. With a 1:1 initiative, the tools also support differentiation and personalized learning.
