What is Tidal by Redwood?

Tidal Automation, from Redwood Software since the early 2023 acquisition, is an enterprise workload automation platform for automating and orchestrating cross-application, cross-platform workloads – in on-prem, cloud or hybrid environments – from one central point of control. Tidal is used to optimize mission-critical business processes, manage SLAs, improve use of IT resources and meet regulatory audit and compliance requirements. Although Tidal has a 35+ year history, the vendor describes their continual commitment to innovate, with a product development cycle that includes launching three major releases per year.

The Tidal Automation platform is designed to be implemented in days, not weeks. The user interface aims to make it quick and easy to accomplish the tasks at hand.

Boasting a small footprint, a single instance of Tidal manages thousands of processes and applications, and hundreds of thousands of jobs per day. As the user's automation needs grow, they can expand the Tidal environment to meet business and operational requirements.

The vendor collaborates with Tidal's user community to define and deliver customer-driven enhancements to their solutions. Their first-line technical support is provided by engineers; there’s no “tier 1” or escalation process customers have to go through.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

As sales operation Analyst, in our organization we work on multiple reports in a day which requires jobs to run frequently and due to this we had to manually schedule the jobs every time which was often time consuming and led to manual errors.
Thanks, to Tidal automation and its features which allowed scheduling of multiple jobs automatically without any manual intervention which in turn lowered manual errors.

We were mainly using this software to load the complex operation and sequencing to machineries which automatically does the work what we required without any operations skips and helps in smooth flowing of jobs without any layman hands in it and if there are any kind of error it immediately alerts with its notification and can be easily solve the issues

Tidal Automation is a tool which is used to schedule, automate and manage things in a way is easier while functioning and working on it. Some of the business problems and scope of use are: 1. Tidal is working towards hybrid solution (i.e) where most of the applications now are converting from on-prem to Azure environments. 2. GUI is an area where it can be improved, making more user-friendly and attractive by improving its functionality as it sometimes gets little busy and time-consuming. 3. Also, whenever there a bug/issue in Tidal we are reaching out to/ raising a case with TIDAL team so they help us in identify it which may sometime delay and if its production environment it leads to loss of revenue which may eventually leads to customers trust in product.

Pros

Tidal Automation allows us to automate and schedule/ perform various tasks in a easy and effective manner. It is highly interactive and effective allowing nearly 4k -5k jobs to run a day.
Tidal is designed to be easily shareable and collaborative allowing multiple users to work at a particular time making work effective.
Tidal allows us to ensure that every event which is triggered is exactly when it's supposed to be regardless of other activities which are going as well.
It is user-friendly to generate the reports required of a particular object and allows us to test the codes perfectly well before executing in live environment.

Cons

It fluctuates when there are many URL's open in use which is time consuming as it delay to load while working.
When there are more than 1 function to perform in an object/job it is not possible as it takes 1 function at a time.
There are some things where we need to do it repeatedly for every n mins which can be try to resolve which sometime maybe irritating as there will other activities also going on.
Sometimes, when there are more than 2-3 TWA open and if we select a job and try to cancel, it selects the jobs which are also selected in another tab of TWA to cancel which is a serious threat in production environment.

Return on Investment

It has a positive impact on factors like increase in productivity, easy to implement as there some options pre-built in it which automates and perform.
It also reduces human error mostly as it involve less manual performance and tool is time saving in this perspective.
It also has negative impacts like cost of the tool as its expensive and if it's not properly utilized it may lead huge revenue loss as all will be scheduled per plan.
We have to continually monitor its effectiveness to ensure a positive return on investment.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Tidal Automation to run batch jobs for our payroll system, which is typically a few hundred jobs a night. We also use it to run IT-related jobs such as backups, system checks, maintenance, FTP transfers, etc.

Tidal Automation enables our business to have a graphical view into the schedule as well as control. If a job aborts, the schedule can pause or continue by using the events available. Our business is notified through these events so they can take action immediately for time sensitive jobs.

Job flow versatility is important to our business. Tidal Automation has many different options handling job dependencies that fulfill our needs.

Pros

Graphical view of what's going on in the schedule. Color coded jobs statuses, etc.
Lots of options for event handling.
Dependency flexibility.
Job Grouping and grouping options.

Cons

Still a bit slow when navigating. If you close a job you have to wait a few seconds to open another one. Even when you made no changes.
When viewing a job and make no changes, the "ok" button changes the last modified date as if you made a change. No big deal, but wastes time when troubleshooting a problem and looking into what jobs were changed last.
You can see the parameters column in the "job activity", but not in "Job definitions".
Can't search the parameters field in the filter.
Changing a variable name does not change it on the job. It still works because Tidal Automation uses the ID number. It just causes confusion when you see a variable on a job and can't find the variable under "Variables". On top of that, Tidal Automation does not show the ID column under "Variables" making it even more difficult to find the variable.

Return on Investment

Although I don't have hard numbers, with the amount of jobs that we have and the amount of "Special" circumstances the business requires, Tidal Automation fills the need. Running all these jobs manually would take a tremendous amount of employee time.
