What is Tidal by Redwood?

Tidal Automation, from Redwood Software since the early 2023 acquisition, is an enterprise workload automation platform for automating and orchestrating cross-application, cross-platform workloads – in on-prem, cloud or hybrid environments – from one central point of control. Tidal is used to optimize mission-critical business processes, manage SLAs, improve use of IT resources and meet regulatory audit and compliance requirements. Although Tidal has a 35+ year history, the vendor describes their continual commitment to innovate, with a product development cycle that includes launching three major releases per year.

The Tidal Automation platform is designed to be implemented in days, not weeks. The user interface aims to make it quick and easy to accomplish the tasks at hand.

Boasting a small footprint, a single instance of Tidal manages thousands of processes and applications, and hundreds of thousands of jobs per day. As the user's automation needs grow, they can expand the Tidal environment to meet business and operational requirements.

The vendor collaborates with Tidal's user community to define and deliver customer-driven enhancements to their solutions. Their first-line technical support is provided by engineers; there’s no “tier 1” or escalation process customers have to go through.

Well suited: Tidal by Redwood is well-liked for automating Database / Data Warehouse operations, ETL operations, Managed File Transfers. Tidal by Redwood does a good job being a framework to link programmatic - disparate systems within the same organizations (i.e., involving Linux, Windows, database, REST API calls, moving files around via SFTP in the same workflow) In large enterprises with thousands of jobs and workflows, Tidal by Redwood user interface is very powerful and can be used to quickly find relevant objects (filtering with several sort options). Tidal by Redwood API is very useful for "automating the automation tool", a term I use to describe automating a large number of job edits, inserts, modifications. It has a clever interface that allows you prepared XML code via a web interface, negating the need to solely submit posts via script. Less appropriate: In years past, the product was often usable by management and less-technical staff. Over the course of the years it has become more complex, adding new features and capabilities. This has been a blessing and also a curse. Now I find the learning curve too steep for casual users to invest the time learning it. Promoting jobs between environments is byzantine. The legacy application for this (Transporter) is slow to load in my experience. The new application (Repository) is now on the 6th version and in my opinion feels like the UI was designed by a programmer and tested with very small environments. In my opinion, it is not intuitive, and still considered not ready for use by the majority of the user community. Job versioning is still in its infancy.

On coming to well suited experience while error handling and effortless recovery processes are crucial, Tidal performs exceptionally well. It can identify and fix automated issues, reducing downtime and interruptions. A smaller automation solution may be more cost-effective if a business primarily utilizes a single platform or uses a small number of applications that do not require complex integration.

Tidal automation is best suited in an organizational environment where the tasks are done manually and cannot be scheduled by time or a specific event, for example whenever new data is uploaded on to a database server the reporting and visualization tools need to be refreshed and published in order to view real-time data on services. Tidal automation can automate this by scheduling jobs based on events like whenever the new data is uploaded, the database refresh can be triggered which can in turn trigger the refresh and publish of reports and dashboards that are connected to the database.

Not an appropriate fit for small size corporates where tasks are minimal and can be manually handled.

Tidal Automation is best suited for event driven scheduling, wherein you can set-up a job, send a email or notification on event occurrence. This helps you to work in dynamic environment. Event based scheduling gives you the flexibility to not depend on time based scheduling. You need now worry about the complex algorithms. Tidal makes it easier to setup the task and triggers such as file arrival, status of SLA's.

Some of the scenario's where it is well suited are: 1. Manufacturing: Tidal can automate the scheduling of production objects, ensure that materials are delivered on time. 2. It is also well suited in IT environments where there is a need to monitor systems, application workflows and data backup and recovery. 3. It is good tool for managing and processing large volumes of data which cannot be done everyday by running codes/scripts manually which Tidal does it with ease when required. Some of the scenarios where it is less appropriate are: 1. Tidal is not much recommended if workflows are simple and don't require much automation to perform as manual working may suffice. 2. Tidal is used for enterprise scale manufacturing organizations with complex/hard workflows to process large volume of data and may not be cost effective for small scale organizations. 3. Tidal is best suited for repetitive processes, if workflows are more ad-hoc or on demand then it is not best fitted.

It can track all the process that are running in the system hence none of the jobs are left behind . Organizing the jobs are well done as the scheduler will be held responsible for the same.

Tidal Automation works great for running our payroll system. The jobs can be grouped up into "folders" for organization. It's easy for non-technical personnel to follow. The dependency functions are versatile. You can have dependencies on jobs outside or inside the group that's running. That's very helpful when you have special year-end "on-demand" jobs running in parallel with the current payroll group. You can label a dependency as "ignore if not in schedule" so when it does show up in the schedule it will be waited on at that time. This makes it so nice to just add a job in when needed without having to worry if it will run at the correct point.

I have been in the industry and particularly in Workload Automation Solutions for past 8+ years, and I have personally worked on Automic, AutoSys, Control-M, Stonebranch and Tidal Automation. Out of all these solutions I would put Tidal Automation as my first preference, followed by RunMyJobs, Control-M, Stonebranch, considering all the aspects like ease of use, customer support experience, transparent pricing, continuous evolution, industry best product documentation, and last but not the least and only applies with Tidal Automation is the well dedicated and concentrated team working on one particular solution to make it the best in the industry.

Tidal is easy to use and can accomplish quite a lot with fill-in-the-blank forms. There is integration with many standard third-party tools with more always being added based on industry trends.

The API is powerful and comprehensive, but lacks good documentation.

The agent service is lightweight and scales well.

Calendar support for scheduling is unmatched.

Versioning support is kludgy and migrating between DEV, QA and Prod needs work.
