Appian (Direct Route) is used by our centralized routing team, servicing 40 Distribution Centers across the country. It assists in building a route plan for a private fleet of over 800 tractors. Aside from generating a delivery plan, it houses all critical customer data (lat/long, receiving hours, etc.). The software can be used to optmize routes, to reduce miles / routes and generate cost savings, and also for modeling purpose in project analysis.
  • Software integrates well with other on-board monitoring devices (plan transfer to truck/driver)
  • Product does a great job of assisting in off-router stop placement to assure the impact to miles is minimal.
  • Direct Route tool is essential in project analysis to determine impact to miles/hours for proposed changes.
  • Transit times are sometimes inaccurate/inconsistent.
  • Software can slow down as a route file undergoes many changes.
  • Large quantity of input files can sometimes create confusion/inconsistency when route files are shared by multiple users.
Direct Route software if best suited in a dynamic routing environment with milkrun/peddle routes. If a company is running static routes with one or two stops, the tool most likely will have limited impact on cost reduction. However, if a company delivers to many stops and has an opportunity to reroute their network, the tool would most likely reduce miles/routes and generate cost savings.
  • Improved service to customers by being more aware of ETA's and how they relate to each store's receiving hours.
  • Reduced transportation costs in dynamic environment where routes are optimized daily using Direct Route.
  • Better customer service to field by generating e-mail notifications for following day's ETA's, along with notifications when trips are behind schedule.
Appian products have become an instrumental tool within the company, from a daily tactical standpoint building route plans, to a strategic standpoint in assisting with project analysis. Since the tool is able to interface with many different on-board computer vendors, it is something that could be used by the company long term.

Appian is used as our primary route design tool for our Supply Chain Solutions / Dedicated Contract Carriage operations unit. We apply it to both new business development tasks as well as existing account ongoing management tasks. Other operating units within the company are supported by our group's Appian analysts and we have the potential to assign analysis resources to specific customer accounts if needed.
  • Appian is excellent for use in both the analysis arena and ongoing operations support. The speed to solution and quality of solution is at the top of the market.
  • The configurability of the system gives the user the flexibility to address almost any route problem imaginable. Analysts have the ability to recreate the "world" to fit their customer's needs rather than forcing the customer into a predetermined framework.
  • The installation of the software is flexible and can be structured to fit any work group's format, from a centralized core to a distributed mobile analysis team.
  • With the extreme flexibility and configurability of the system also comes a need to have one or more high end users of the software. Not every rank and file analyst will be able to take full advantage of the program.
  • There will inevitably be some customer problems that the system isn't able to successfully address. This may not always be a fault if the system (it can also stem from lack of information from the customer), but it will result in analyst frustration.
  • We have had a few issues with the configuration of the program on a particular analyst's PC. TMW support was very helpful in working out a solution, but it was still a week+ length issue to resolve.
It is VERY adept at creating solutions for single or multiple point collection or distribution scenarios. We have multiple customers with large, central DCs that utilize Appian for their regular route rationalization processes. We have had less success when analyzing "touring" fleets where only historical data was available. Without the flexibility to change/select new combinations, the solution quality is diminished.
  • Analysis setup and completion time is dramatically improved.
  • Quality of solutions exceed previous tools
  • Overall product cost is among the best in the industry
Appian was best suited for an analysis environment both functionally and from a cost structure standpoint. Other packages are targeting ongoing operations and their cost structures reflect that goal. The purely analytical environment can underestimated in these situations. There is definitely a need for non operation specific analysis tools in the marketplace.

We have been very pleased with Appian and have several experienced users proficient in multiple analysis types. We see the benefit of Appian being a long term partner for our company and our operating group in particular. There would have to be significant negative developments in the product or support to force us into a change.

Appian Direct Route is being used in the engineering department. It attempts to optimize the transportation routes at Black Horse Carriers.
  • Ability to optimize routes based on specific parameters
  • Ability to show a detailed map with routes in different color
  • Ability to optimize within routes
  • PC Miler integration
  • Distance settings are too complicated for the end user and you're not always confident the mileage is correct
  • Misc errors do occur from time to time which means the integration between Appian and Excel needs to improve for Appian to be a stable product
Appian is well suited for optimization of routes and contrary to what Appian claims, it is not well suited for scheduling.
  • Decreased employee efficiency because of numerous errors and constant troubleshooting
  • Successfully optimized routes
  • TruckStops Optimization Software
We used to use TruckStops until we switched to Appian Direct Route. I was very happy with TruckStops mainly because it was a simple system that got the job done. There were no integration issues, no errors left and right, no hassle. Appian on the other hand, while it is a nice system, it needs a lot of work. During optimization, mileage is critical and I am afraid Appian fails in this aspect with the lack of proper integration with PC Miler which is industry standard.
Many issues with the system and I will probably recommend other type of software if the question arises. Because of the investment my company has made, I will use the system for now.
