We use Veeam Data Platform in many situations, but it is the primary backup platform for all systems in the Asia region. We have also used Veeam Data Platform to migrate VMs over a high latency, low bandwidth WAN circuit. It is been excellent for us in both scenarios. I highly recommend the platform for backing up VMware workloads on premise and in the cloud.
  • Backup multiple platforms.
  • Allow for backup to multiple types of targets.
  • Replicate virtual machines from one location to another or into the cloud.
Cons
  • It should recommend the most secure method of backup methods to ensure immutability.
  • It should maximize SnapMirror technology when using a NetApp as a backup target to replicate backups to CVO targets.
  • It should provide a centralized dashboard for backing up all PaaS services in Azure.
Veeam Data Platform is best suited in smaller VMware environments with a handful of VMs. It is easy to setup and manage once in place and can do an excellent job of replicating VMs over low bandwidth, high latency WAN circuits. It is also excellent in replicating backups into the cloud. It can become more difficult in large data centers due to the number of proxies.

Veeam is a great all around backup and replication solution!

We use Veeam to backup our entire organizations data that cannot be easily retrievable or restored otherwise. This includes shared files and documents, entire VMs of domain controllers and other servers and even a few various full computer images for machines that need to be set up in a very specific way. Not every employee in a non-profit industry such as this is incredibly tech savvy. Couple that with the fact that as a non-profit, we generally cannot afford to keep all of our technology on the cutting edge, sometimes things happen and files get lost, or deleted, or corrupted. Veeam has made it a breeze for me to restore those files, systems or virtual machines with the click of a couple of buttons. This saves potentially weeks or months of work being lost due to a small mistake or a large catastrophic failure. And with the replication feature, it's easy to save multiple copies of the backed up files, as well as keep multiple iterations of the backups going back a specific amount of time. This software has saved my life (and quite possibly my job) dozens of times over the years and I am extremely pleased at having made the decision to move to it when I did.
  • Virtual Machine restores. Whether a full over-write, being moved to a new location, or a live restore, it's quick and easy.
  • Ease of browsing for individual files that may need to be restored due to a minor mistake.
  • Very easy to test restores to make sure everything is still working.
Cons
  • The UI isn't terrible, but it could definitely be better.
  • The initial opening of the software takes several minutes, and could potentially be optimized for faster loading.
  • In-program tutorials to help walk new people through processes that can get complicated.
If you need relatively easy to setup and forget backups to go to multiple places, this is the best bet, hands down. If you need to get into things a little more complicated, it can get tricky as you will most likely have to turn to the internet to figure out exactly how something needs to be done.

Veeam Data Platform serves our need for maintaining backups of our systems and facilitating the recovery of those systems should a Disaster Recovery situation arise. The wide variety of recovery options allows us to recover full systems down to individual files that a user accidentally deletes or becomes corrupted.
  • Elastic recovery to recover only what is needed whether it's a single file or a full system/servers
  • Allow for immutable storage
  • Integration with virtual platforms and some SAN providers directly
Cons
  • Allow for a Backup and Replication to occur in one job
  • Allow for further flexibility with data retention such as allowing some servers in a job different retention than others or changing in retention over time. Example is backup daily for 7 days, then store a weekly backup for 8 weeks, monthly backup for 13 months, etc. all within the job.
  • More communication about platform updates. Many new features come out and we are not aware until a little further down the road.
I think Veeam Data Platform is a great platform for almost all businesses. The only businesses that I would not recommend it for are small businesses that may not have an IT staff to manage the solution or don't have enough infrastructure to justify the expense of an Enterprise grade solution. In those cases I would recommend either a managed solution or a simple backup solution.

In my organization, NSW Health, Veeam Data Platform is used for data backup, recovery, and protection. It helps prevent data loss, minimize downtime, and ensure data availability across various healthcare-related systems and environments, including virtualized, physical, and cloud-based workloads. This is crucial for maintaining critical healthcare services and safeguarding patient data. Veeam also supports disaster recovery and multi-cloud data management within the scope of NSW Health's IT infrastructure.
  • Efficient Backup and Recovery
  • Cloud Integration
  • Application-Aware Backups
  • Cross-Platform Recovery
  • Monitoring and Reporting
Cons
  • Simplified Licensing and Pricing Models
  • Advanced Data Analytics and Insights
  • Deeper Integration with Cloud-Native Services
  • Enhanced Compliance and Auditing Features
Well-Suited Scenarios:
Virtualized Environments: Veeam excels in VMware and Hyper-V environments, providing efficient backup and recovery with minimal impact on production workloads.
- Hybrid Cloud Environments: Ideal for managing backups across on-premises and cloud infrastructures, Veeam ensures secure, flexible disaster recovery in hybrid settings.
- Large-Scale Enterprises: Veeam’s scalability and centralized management make it perfect for large organizations, streamlining data protection across multiple sites.
- Disaster Recovery Planning: Veeam's instant VM recovery and orchestrated failover are crucial for businesses focused on minimizing downtime during disasters.

Less-Appropriate Scenarios:
- Legacy Tape-Based Backups: Veeam is less suited for organizations reliant on tape storage, as its strengths lie in disk and cloud-based backups.
- Very High I/O Intensive Workloads: For extremely high I/O environments, Veeam may impact performance, making specialized solutions more suitable.

We use Veeam Backup & Replication to back up our Virtual Server infrastructure on-premises and also use it to back up to the cloud for disaster recovery. We need the ability to be able to restore both files and also application items like SQL databases. We have up to 3 copies of every server in different locations and Veeam Backup & Replication gives us the option to do this easily. We are currently using the cloud backup as strictly a DR option as we have so many failovers on-premesis.
  • Instant recovery option
  • Quickly add and remove VMs
  • Connects to failover infrastructure
Cons
  • It doesn't handle running more than 4 tasks at once
  • It is a slow application to use and log into
  • When removing a portable hard drive used for a restore the terminology is a bit confusing
We found Veeam Backup & Replication to be great for backing up virtual servers and that is the only use we have had for it. From what I have seen in my experience, the live restore function doesn't seem to work on a VM more than 4TB in size. It gets to the 4TB and fails every time.
