Veritas Netbackup: ultimate king of backup empire
- License is very pricey in comparison to other backup tools.
- Deployment depends upon lot of factors (server socket size, I/O, processors, CPU).

- It can back up bytes of data, but I have seen we don't get very good bandwidth using media servers even though we have a lot of unused bandwidth.

Veritas Netbackup, it works.
- It saves us money when compared to the cost of other solutions
- We can back something up and I have faith that I can restore it
- It is reliable and works well but must be managed
- The cost is substantial no matter how it is licensed. They switched from a host based model to a storage based scenario, and the cost was lower at first, but quickly spiraled out of control. Our renewal and trueup was just too much.
- When data is lost, we are able to quickly restore and return to normal business.
- When an application upgrade fails we are able to go back to a known good state.
- Large restores are slow at times, so be sure to plan for this in your recovery point objective.

Not a new kid on the block!

Backing up data for the future
- The biggest thing that I have seen is that we have our data safely backed up, cataloged, and stored off site. This is a huge step towards ensuring our we can come back from a disaster.

NetBackup is reliable but can get expensive to maintain
- We never experienced a significant system or data loss during the time we used NetBackup. We restored individuals files and small databases based upon user mistakes, but we never had to implement a DR plan. From that aspect, it is difficult to evaluate the ROI. Backups are a commodity service. Features are very similar across multiple tools. Once you decide to stay on-prem or move to the cloud, the list of options are narrowed. Then it becomes a matter of price.
- From an administration and support perspective, the ROI is low. Vendor technical support is not always responsive. The first two tiers of support are not knowledgeable and their typical recommendation is to read the white paper. My small team spent a lot of time troubleshooting NetBackup, often without much vendor help.
