We as UI/UX designers do a lot of research and testing, and for that, we make a lot of diagrams and flowcharts that help us to find the user's pain points and stuff. And for that, we regularly use Microsoft Visio and so far we are more than happy. Earlier we were using wireframe and photoshop tools, but it was way more time-consuming and hard to make complex diagrams. With Visio, it became a really easy process and with its templates and pre-made shapes, it made our process much faster and more efficient. It also makes 3D map diagrams which are helpful in a lot of cases and you can pull data from external sources, so really easy to map user testing data for us.
  • Simple to complex flow charts and diagrams.
  • 3D map diagrams.
  • Pull in live information from an external source like excel sheets.
  • Built in shapes and templates.
  • Make it more visually stunning, like it now feels little too old.
  • 3D graphics needs a major upgrade so it can look like really advance and sleek.
  • Price for professional is too high.
As I mentioned earlier, we didn't know about Visio and we made all our diagrams and charts inside Photoshop, illustrator, and other basic wireframing tools and it was an excruciating experience but then we came to know about Visio and it made our process very smooth and time-saving in most cases. Now we just use the templates and pre-made shapes and create all our app flowcharts and it's super fast and easy. For people like us who make these diagrams and charts on daily basis, this tool is a blessing to have. But for most non-professionals and who don't make complex charts, it's not really essential to have but yes it's still useful. can't really pinpoint any scenarios where you can't utilize it's feature set.
  • Pulling external data - helps with UX flow and user behavior testing.
  • 3D mapping in some cases.
  • Templates for quick designs.
  • Can't think of any other than price.
Honestly non, wish we knew this tool earlier and I feel so stupid for using Photoshop and Illustrator for doing such work.

We use Microsoft Visio for diagrams. We did not have good diagrams of our networks, processes and floors [so] Microsoft Visio was an excellent solution [for us]. [It] comes with a number of great templates that one can use for their networks, data/process flows, and floor plans. Microsoft Visio [is also] visually appealing and easily addressed our needs. We [are] currently using Microsoft Visio for our project management flow processes [as well].
  • Exporting in PDF format
  • Can utilize thousands of symbols from various categories like devices, flows, etc.
  • Simple interface
  • Able to download and apply stencils quite easily
  • There could be better integration between Visio and MS Word, especially when it comes to importing graphics from the one to the other.
  • User interface can be more user friendly for any user to use.
  • When creating connectors between objects, the glue type feature can be an option rather than the default.
Microsoft Visio is a very flexible drawing package that is well suited [for] documenting simple or complex network topologies and creating process maps and flows. Microsoft Visio lacks integration with other documents like Word and PowerPoint. We should have the ability to add mind maps, flowcharts, and other diagrams to document in other Microsoft Office products but that feature is missing.
  • Flexibility of drawing diagrams
  • Usability
  • Portability
  • Negative - cost is high
  • Positive - increased productivity of project managers using PowerPoint to create diagrams and flow charts
Lucidchart is very simple to use and integrates well with other Microsoft products. Lucidchart is great for simple diagrams but it is not a perfect solution for complex diagrams [compared to] Microsoft Visio which stands out. Microsoft Visio has really advanced diagramming tools that Lucidchart does not. Lucidchart also does not offer the same level of flexibility as Microsoft Visio [does] and that's where Microsoft Visio stands out.

Since we are a not-for-profit organization, the cost of a product is definitely something we [have] to consider. The benefits of Microsoft Visiob features and enhanced productivity workflows for our staff outweighed the costs. These were important factors that we considered in our decision-making process, among a few other factors.
I would not consider the cost during the next evaluation and selection process. Instead, I would focus on how Microsoft Visio compares to other products in the industry and the needs of our users and compare that to Microsoft Visio. Although cost is also important, the features and productivity enhancements are something that is more noticeable and valuable in Microsoft Visio.

[It's] Used across multiple departments to develop process flows for training and business documentation. Specifically use it to outline technical steps as well as steps users will take to follow the business path.
  • Process flows
  • Business analysis
  • Project planning
  • Easier to develop multi department flows, when you're outlining the flow, currently if you need to shift where swimlanes are located it completely alters your diagram (when boxes are connected with arrows) and you have to basically restart it.
  • This is the most nit picky thing ever, BUT, while working through a process flow if you realize you need to change the basic standard flow shapes to another shape you have to go back and redo the whole thing. If there was a way to change the shape by right clicking on the box instead to instant switch instead of copy/paste/realign/reconnect to switch out the shape I would personally be forever grateful. I once did a workflow in all start/end process circles, so dumb, but I had to go back through and rewrite the whole thing into the process boxes. It was a super large workflow. It was such a pain in the ass.
  • I didn't realize that Visio could be used for Gantt charts and project management until this review. To make those features more user-friendly or as a separate tab would allow users to track business process flows AND if kicking off a project - link the project timeline to certain steps.
Well Suited:
Project management, business documentation, process flows. Great for kick off meetings to document customer expectations or technical projects to pinpoint integration points/sub processes.
  • Return on investments due to identifying savings or gaps while documenting steps and servers needed in process flows.
  • Increased resource capacity, easy to see where we can change a manual process into an automated one while documenting processes.
  • Team planning and project kick off meetings, great visual to use while documenting the process our operations customers need our team to accomplish.
MindManager and Visio are similar however MindManager doesn’t give you the same customization. Visio is definitely preferred when it comes to mapping out processes and documenting future and current state.
MindManager, MS SharePoint, MS SharePoint / SQL, UltraEdit, Microsoft Visual Studio Code, Microsoft Office 2016, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Project, IDOL (formerly HP IDOL), OneNote, Maestro, Jabber, Snagit, Amazon Cloud Drive, Google Analytics, Google App Maker, Google Drive, SharePoint Designer, Google Pay (formerly Google Wallet), PayPal Payments, Apple iCloud, Cisco SSL VPN, Windows Server, AppSense, Ipswitch MOVEit, Webex Meetings, OnBase by Hyland

I work in the operations department at UHC and am not sure how many other departments use Visio. It's a standard download for the operations team when they are assigned equipment but I'm unaware if its used by call centers, medical staff, and IT employees.

Working for a 300k+ person company I'm unsure of how large our IT department is. However, outside of installation issues I would not call them for visio support. I've found that the online microsoft visio forums make it easy to troubleshoot any of my program issues or questions.
  • Kickoff meetings for projects, great to document customer expectations of how they would like us to develop their process with our technology.
  • Current and future state project documentation made easy with organized diagrams.
  • I've even used Visio to clean up a Microsoft word smarart diagram my husband created for his employees, he's a chef. He was so happy to see all the processes and sub processes clearly outlined for his staff to follow for the state food safety requirements.
  • My team only has one use for Microsoft Visio - process flows. After reading questions in this review I'm excited to explore other capabilities in Visio. I was not aware of them before this review.
  • Project management
  • Project timelines
I LOVE Visio for project workflow documentation. Customers come to us to develop workflows for them and integrate systems. Visio makes it easy to understand and document customer needs as well as highlight web service touchpoints and integration areas.
Not Sure
N/a. Unaware of why this product is the main process flow application for the company.
I love this product but I'm not sure why it was chosen by my company.
  • Don't know
Super easy to navigate and helpful support forum which answers most of my questions!
I think the fact that I have never had to reach out to customer support for issues or questions for visio says it all. If i ever need help troubleshooting or have questions I go to the support forum and ALWAYS find my answer there.
  • Super easy to quickly throw together business workflows to understand process operations.
  • Easy to separate lines of business and teams with swimlanes
  • Great for producing step by step training material for new employees for process operations.
  • Formatting can be frustrating at times moving around the process flow.
Great product super easy to use.
