What is VMware SD-WAN?

The VMware SD-WAN solution consists of hosted or on-premises cloud gateways; branch office appliances and data center appliances; a central orchestrator to automate policies; and virtual services insertion capabilities.

VMware SD-WAN Edge

Enterprise-class appliances to provide secure, optimized connectivity to applications anywhere, on and off cloud. VMware SD-WAN Edge software is zero touch provisioned for a secure, optimized connectivity to applications and data. The VMware SD-WAN Edge with VMware SD-WAN Dynamic Multipath Optimizationâ„¢ (DMPO) and deep application recognition aggregates multiple links and steers traffic over optimal links to other VMware SD-WAN Edges in branch offices, private data centers, campuses, and headquarters.

They can integrate with the existing network via routing protocols and benefit from dynamic learning and automation. VMware SD-WAN Edges deliver highly available deployment with a redundancy protocol. They can host virtual network function (VNF) services simplifying branch office deployments of network services. The VMware SD-WAN Edge is available in different form factors: hardware-based appliance, a virtual appliance, on the cloud marketplaces and a virtual machine (VM) on a server or as a VNF.

VMware SD-WAN Gateways

VMware SD-WAN Gateways optimize data paths to all applications, branches, and data centers along with the ability to deliver network services to and from the cloud. A distributed network of gateways, deployed around the world or on-premises at service providers, provide scalability, redundancy, and on-demand flexibility.

VMware SD-WAN Gateways implement DMPO, cloud virtual private network (VPN), and VMware SD-WAN Multisource Inbound Quality of Service between global cloud services (software as a service (Saas), infrastructure as a service (IaaS), network services) and each VMware SD-WAN Edge, enabling multiple broadband and private leased lines to appear as a single, high-performance WAN.

VMware SD-WAN Orchestrator

A cloud-hosted or on-premises secure and scalable web-based central management tool provides simplified configuration, provisioning, monitoring, fault management, logging, and reporting. The VMware SD-WAN Orchestrator enables the simple implementation of business-based policies for application delivery, simplifying application traffic management. Using VMware SD-WAN’s zero touch deployment capability, VMware SD-WAN can be quickly installed. The VMware SD-WAN Edge is shipped to the branch office where non-IT personnel can plug in power and a few cables. Activation, configuration, and ongoing management are all handled in the VMware SD-WAN Orchestrator.

We utilize SDWAN to aggregate our 17 branch locations together to provide consistent and reliable connections for business applications.
This has provided an enhanced level of response with real time applications and allowed for seamless failover between the different connections deployed. VeloCloud's SDWAN allows for detailed real time information of aggregated links.
  • Displays real time link information and utilization statistics.
  • Allows for configuration and troubleshooting through the portal.
  • Intuitive graphical design displays easy to read statistics for QoE.
  • Some of the settings and configurations aren't as intuitive as desired.
  • The layout of the UI could be improved for better dashboard experience.
  • Ability to have more than one site/destination up at a time to compare traffic between links.
VMware SD WAN is a great solution for tying multiple locations together that are not physically located close. The link aggregation used in the technology allows for quicker failover to redundant connections, which makes the surface traffic seem to be uninterrupted. If planning to connect multiple locations while utilizing the existing internet, Veloclouds SDWAN provides stable and accurate aggregation of connections that provide a good sense of stability for the price.

  • Inclusion of this product has led to our removal of old point to point and self managed wireless tower communication.
  • Switching to Velocloud SDWAN allowed us to remove distributed repository style framework and embrace a newer option.
  • Switching to SDWAN has already mitigated several instances of connections going down and the quick failover means there was no business interruption.
We preferred the features and UI of the Velocloud compared to FortiGate SDWAN. They seemed to offer the same sets of information in different layouts. Our company decided on Velocloud for personal/aesthetic reasons. They offered a more concise set of graphs and tables out of the box for us. SD WAN provided us a with a broader look into our connections with a more robust view, which Velocloud backed by Vmware, gave us.

We used VeloCloud to replace our MPLS environment where having Cisco routers wouldn't support SD-WAN a few years back. VeloCloud was ahead of the game when making the decision to redesign our networking infrastructure. They truly continue to make constant improvements with cloud based upgrades and played a major role in our ability to adapt to the work from home environment this past year. Having multiple public circuits and quickly standing up an office has also played a major role in our growth. Their documentation is also robust and very easy to understand. Their support for APIs is also a big factor when integrating with our monitoring solution.
  • Direct cloud access.
  • Scalable growth for network infrastructure.
  • Flexible control over application data flows.
  • Reporting could use some improvement.
  • Monitoring insights.
VeloCloud was the #1 choice out of various POCs performed when migrating off of MPLS into an ADI/public internet circuit environment. Their ability to also be top of rack with certain software vendors played a major role in improving user experience. Their dynamic DMPO and circuit load balancing can cause some challenges when working with other entities that use a static whitelisting service for access to resources.

  • Business Policy
  • Scalable Network Infrastructure
  • VeloCloud has helped us reduce the time to open a new office.
  • Quickly configure using profile templates.
  • Security at our branch sites using cloud security services.
At the time we made our decision to move forward with VeloCloud, Cisco Viptela and Cisco Meraki were the two players we compared against. Cisco's offerings were very customizable when using Viptela, but there was a big learning curve to implement. Meraki at the time was a lot simpler, but we needed the ability to customize some features in order to implement SD-WAN in our environment. VeloCloud was the perfect solution during our POC as it satisfied our needs.
