What is WatchGuard AuthPoint?

WatchGuard AuthPoint is a multi-factor authentication (MFA) service that helps companies keep their assets, information, and user identities secure. Multi-factor authentication solutions can enable organizations to close security gaps that leave companies vulnerable to breaches by adding a layer of security beyond just a username and password – without creating a disruptive user experience. AuthPoint’s mobile app makes it easy for users to approve or deny login attempts, according to the vendor, with just a single touch right from their smartphone. WatchGuard’s AuthPoint solution is managed via the Cloud, meaning there’s no expensive hardware to deploy, and can be managed from anywhere using WatchGuard Cloud’s intuitive interface.

Great 2fa product.

I have used Authy, google authenticator, last pass, and a few others; the push notification is definitely more convenient than having to go look for the app and type the token every time.

FortiAuthenticator is OTP based only or 2FA. Whereas, WatchGuard AuthPoint has the flexibility of choosing OTP, QR, password, or Push notification. Fortitoken licenses are affixed to a single FortiGate unit and can only be used for FortiGate services only. Whereas WatchGuard AuthPoint can be deployed in many different applications, thus more value is added.

Most of the MFA solutions we looked at required an entry of 6-8 digit code to approve MFA requests. WatchGuard AuthPoint supports multiple options like push notifications, one-time passwords and QR codes. You can set the MFA with either or all. You can authorize the MFA request with your mobile app and it doesn't require a 6-8 digit code. A few of our users decided to use hardware tokens instead of the smartphone app. We tested FortiClient which had limitations. WatchGuard AuthPoint hardware tokens were easy to use. We also tested Netwrix SbPAMas well, but it's solution was not a good fit in to my requirement. Overall WatchGuard AuthPint is much better.

We went straight to this product because we've run Watchguard firewalls for over 10 years and have been happy. A cursory check on google didn't bring up much other than Cisco products. There are far too many of those and we'd need a degree in this to figure out what we needed. WatchGuard AuthPoint worked with Watchguard AuthPoint and came from our trusted vendor.

Duo Secure works in a very similar way. We utilize WatchGuard routers & access points in all our offices. We use the WatchGuard Mobile VPN software too. We knew that the WatchGuard AuthPoint would integrate well with our current equipment.

The main detail that we like about Wacthguard is that we have the option to manage all our security in a unique dashboard, from firewalls, access points, endpoints computers, and outpoints users, this feature associated with the security protection and their technical support was very important for us.

Azure is much more complicated to setup. ManageEngine is an ok solution for smaller, single location networks.

We chose AuthPoint as it was so easy for our customer and their ROI. They already have a WatchGuard firewall so all we needed to do was get them hooked up into AuthPoint which was very easy and fast to do under their current timeline. This was implemented in less than two days total.

We use DUO Mobile for our other MFA (i.e., Remote Desktop for Windows.) WatchGuard offers instructions on how to set up MFA with DUO, however, the WatchGuard AuthPoint setup was much simpler, so we opted to go that route. We are planning on looking into switching everything to WatchGuard AuthPoint, however, it's not a high priority at this time.

Having the Multi-Factor Authentication developed by the same developer of the devices we use is very beneficial when we have to troubleshoot something. Support is great and is very responsive. Clients seem to prefer using their software over another vendor. The app is very clean and easy to use as well.

AuthPoint has better integration with the product stack. Simpler to implement. Less complex of a setup. Easier to explain to customers and easier training for the engineering/support team. Licenses per user are good value and affordable for the majority of our small and medium-sized businesses that need basic VPN MFA solutions

AuthPoint was a clear choice when comparing these products. With a mixed OS environment, Cisco Duo did not seem to work well. Azure MFA does not work with MAC OS. Watchguard AuthPoint met what we needed.

The product works great but needs more control on the device itself (no jailbroken device, check the local update, etc). The GUI is more clean and simple on the Authpoint side.

Microsoft has many limits on RADIUS, SAML, RDP, and other types of MFA authentication. MS MFA basically only works for Cloud MS services, not locally managed ones.

Enabling MFA for Microsoft 365 online services is easy and straightforward however integrating it into an on-premise Active Directory to use for mobile VPN was quite the challenge compared to the reverse of setting up AuthPoint for both AD integration and M365 online services.

Watchguard Authpoint worked the best for us as we had multiple WatchGuard firewalls and only 2 cisco ASA. If we wanted to use a different product we would have had to replace our corporate firewalls. Also, some of our users are not good with the command line so it just made sense to continue with WatchGuard so all our IT users can assist with supporting our end users.

We use the Microsoft MFA also and I have used the Google Authenticator (only prior to the MS version being released, however). They are similar in terms of functionality of course, but I have not attempted additional integrations using SAML 2.0 or anything like that so cannot comment there.

We prefer the use of MFA via WatchGuard AuthPoint. The app is easy to use and the notifications provide insight into logons that we didn't previously have. Central management via WatchGuard cloud makes setup and maintenance easy. Once initial deployment is complete we don't need to continually make adjustments.

We have implemented both Azure VPN Gateway & Cisco Duo in our environment alongside AuthPoint. Each has a different use case. Azure VPN client (we are using this with O365 MFA) is a split tunnel solution, relatively cost-effective and easy to use - the beauty of the solution is it integrates with our existing O365 MFA Cisco Duo we are using for protecting local admin accounts on both Windows and Linux, we are not using it as part of a VPN solution, we could but that would require buying a Cisco appliance.

The implementation process it's must easy. The management and the cloud platform it's more intuitive. And Swivel needs a physical appliance in the data center location, it's more one hardware to manage. The only positive functionality it's the user-friendly tokenless Swivel solution, the user doesn't need to have a token.
