WinZip is only installed on a couple of computers in our organization due to the nature of WinZip being pretty much a household name at this point. People see zip folders and don't know what it is so SEO on Google tells them WinZip. It's not being used by any special departments or teams, only a few older users who do not know about open source applications like 7z.
  • Zips files
  • Unzips files
  • Encrypts archives
  • Costs too much
  • No new features
  • Windows OS can handle all this for free.
If I could give WinZip a 0, I would. There is no business-case reason to purchase Winzip other than having a support channel to deal with when you can't open a zip file (which they will say the file is probably corrupted and to try to re-download it or obtain it from another source).
  • Winzip is not our standard corporate zip app.
  • It's causing additional troubleshooting.
  • Additional hands-on time for tech support personnel that are trained in 7zip.
Winrar and 7-zip are both unlisted in the TrustRadius drop-down list so I will discuss those here. Winrar is another competitor to WinZip and also works as freeware, allowing you to create multi-part password-protected archives in different compressed formats, all while only reminding you the software isn't free and you should purchase it. Which I am sure very few people do because of 7-zip, the defacto standard for archiving applications with no bloated interface, no unnecessary features, no calling-home to a central server, and it's all done for free.
Listen, nobody can get a perfect 10 (just ask your boss at review time, you can't say you are a 10 because then you'd have nothing to strive for!). WinZip's Support team knows their product, which is a fantastic thing to hear, unlike when you call giant companies (Microsoft, Vipre, and Norton) and their turnaround in their support center is so disgusting that their Support team only knows how to read off of a script.

It is somewhat being used across the whole organization, along with the departmental/individual basis. It is more so readily available across the whole organization for end-users to choose to install/use on their individual machines.

It addresses the business problem of finding a ZIP/compression solution that works seamlessly across various operating systems, without having to install additional software to use the files that were created by the ZIP program.
  • As was previously mentioned one of the greatest strengths of the program is the versatility of using across multiple platforms or being able to open the corresponding zip files on multiple platforms without having to install additional software.
  • Another strength it has in the the graphical user interface (GUI). It is, and always has been, one of the better ones in the industry, as compared to other compression software.
  • One area of improvement is with regards to pricing and the mass market. Since there is no free options for the software (as compared to some other compression programs), this may be a disadvantage to many organizations that are looking for a low/no-cost solution.
  • Another area of improvement can be to its ability to create the smallest file sizes, as compared to what some other compression programs can do. It is not the top contender in this case, but improvements can be made in the future.
It is well suited to environments that are using multiple platforms, or operating systems. The compatibility of Winzip with various OS's is really good. It is also well suited for organizations that are looking for something that is easy to use from an end-user perspective and doesn't really require training to use.

It is less suited for organizations that need/want a low/no-cost compression solution. This would not be Winzip, as they don't offer any "free" options, only paid one. It is also less suited for environments that need to have a solution that will create the smallest size compression file(s) possible. There are some other competitors on the market that is a bit better than Winzip at doing this.
  • It has had both a positive and negative impact on ROI. The positive is it has saved time when working with multiple platforms/OS in our environment. We could create a compressed file and use it across different platforms easily without having to install additional apps/software on those platforms to be able to open/use the file(s).
  • Another positive impact it has had was end-users can still be productive in doing their work, as it has been a relatively simple/intuitive program to use. It doesn't require end-users to have to consult the documentation in order to be able to use the program.
Also, I have tested and used the following similar programs:
WinRAR
7-Zip

How Winzip stacks about against these similar compression programs, and others on the market is Winzip has been around for a very long time (longer than a lot of others), so there is something to be said for its widespread use in industry and organizations around the world. It is a solid product, in terms of the capabilities it has, and the performance of it.

It also has a better Graphical User Interface (GUI) than many others on the market. This has helped greatly to save time in is to use the program right away, and not to have consult documentation on how to use the product.
I haven't had to use any of the support channels to use the program, as it is very intuitive and easy to use for the first time using it. They do have a number of support options available via their sites, such as KB articles, FAQ, and the option to submit an online support request. What doesn't seem to be available is phone number for users to call in for support. This can be frustrating for users that need immediate help, as it appears the quickest turnaround time if you are submitting an online request is 1 day.
