WooCommerce is an eCommerce plugin for WordPress, developed by WooThemes (recently acquired by Automattic). Like WordPress, it is designed to be an extendable, adaptable, open-sourced platform. WooCommerce allows merchants to sell physical products, downloadables, or services. The free core includes: Storefront, a free WordPress theme designed for eCommerce, 5 pre-installed payment gateways (including PayPal and Direct Bank Transfer), coupons, shipping and cart calculators, product listing management and customer account registration, among other features. Many many extensions are available, such as WooCommerce Bookings, for e-merchants selling appointments, services, or rentals.

According to WooThemes (per Builtwith.com), WooCommerce has > 9,524,908 downloads and powers > 30% of online stores.

We use WooCommerce to manage the ecommerce side of our business. Roughly 20% of our purchases are made online, so we needed a system where we could list and update our inventory for our customers to choose from. Aside from this, we also use it to collect feedback & requests, and to run our blog
  • There are a lot of layout options for vertical images.
  • It has low comission rates
  • It's easy to pick up and integrate with other mainstream tools
  • The listings are very easily updatable
  • I find it a bit expensive, especially compared to some of its newer competitors
  • It doesn't have as much technical documentation as other tools like Shopify
  • There aren't a lot of plugins for it
I can vouch for WooCommerce's performance in a small business setting. It has good performance, it's easy to integrate with other tools, the transactions work smoothly, and most importantly, we can get on the system and update our stock/listings in seconds.

We use WooCommerce for our online store to sell books and other materials that we use for our ministry. It is only being used in one department. We use it on the same website that our main website is on. Because it is built to work on WordPress it is easy to maintain and update. I maintain the website and because it is the same platform I can easily maintain the online store as well. It allows us to have an inexpensive online store solution.
  • Updating it is very easy because it runs on WordPress and you use WordPress' plugin update architecture.
  • There are lots of third party plugins to add whatever functionality you need. You also only install the add-ons that you need so you don't have a very bloated system.
  • There are many different payment systems that you can use with WooCommerce
  • It is easy to add new products because it uses Wordpress' editor.
  • It easily integrates with external services like print on demand services.
  • Because of the add-ons you need to install to expand the functionality, it takes time to research each add-on
  • It is not a "install and use right out of the box solution" like some online store services. You need to configure everything.
  • To get a nice store you also have to configure all the other Wordpress parts like choosing a good Wordpress theme.
  • It takes a lot of work to get a nice looking store
WooCommerce is a great platform to create an inexpensive if not free online store if you have the time to learn about it and configure it well. It is especially a great online store platform if you already are experienced using Wordpress since it incorporates so well into it. There are also many great plugins to help you integrate parts of your store into your other content pieces on your WordPress website.

We use WooCommerce for corporate orders and our online stores. Used across the whole organization from sales to marketing. It helps manage our products, orders etc and it is a very core part of our operations.

I have implemented WooCommerce to manage multiple stores on our own WordPress multisite network of more than 1500 member blogs. Through our featured store sites, we sell both physical goods and digital products. I have also installed and helped maintain WooCommerce stores for various other website clients selling a variety of products. WooCommerce is now my preferred e-commerce plugin for any WordPress sites I develop. Using WooCommerce and its various add-ons, I am able to quickly build out an online store and easily manage product inventory and sales.

Our company utilizes WooCommerce to sell customized products via a WordPress eCommerce website. We needed a way for customers to locate our business online, view our product offerings, and eventually place orders. WooCommerce was an easy option since it integrates directly with our website and is free to start. There are many paid plugins that we take advantage of but everything is based on the WooCommerce platform.

It requires no coding experience so is great for beginners who have some website hosting experience. WooCommerce does require you to have a WordPress website that needs to be hosted. Solving hosting problems can be a bit tricky so there are other options if you are looking for a complete one-stop-shop for an eCommerce solution.

WooCommerce has been a game changer in my company. The reason I use WooCommerce is because it's so flexible when it comes to payment gateways and add-ons you can implement. I currently use it for myself and clients that hire us to build their online web store.

  • Many plugins.
  • Back end dashboard is slow.
  • Check out is to complex unless you use a plugin to remove fields when not needed.
WooCommerce is well suited for both pro and amateur users who are needing to build an online web store. WooCommerce is so easy to install and get started, practically anyone can use.

I wouldn't use it if felt I [didn't] need a complete online store. In some cases I will use a form builder with a payment gateway.

I use WooCommerce to sell photography products and services to clients. Often I am booking photography sessions in advance of the date of the shoot, and I have specific time slots available for booking. WooCommerce allows me to make these time slots available to clients and they can book them and pay for them in advance online, from their computer or phone. Because I can combine both the payment and the scheduling, I don't have to worry about double-booking.
  • Free base package means I can use it when I need to and not pay for it when I'm not using it
  • I can customize the e-commerce options and integrate the calendar booking
  • Payment processing is quick and easy and I can choose my provider
  • I have to install plugins to add the functionality I need
  • Sometimes I get conflicts between the plugins I have to install
  • Sometimes customization is not straightforward
[WooCommerce] does really well for simple stores that don't have a lot of products. It's really easy to set up and get products added so people can purchase them online. It's not the best for really complicated stores with products that need a lot of customization; you have to find 3rd-party plugins to add additional functionality to your store and sometimes those can create conflicts between one another.

I work with clients to develop e-commerce websites, and I always recommend designing the site on WordPress and implementing WooCommerce as the e-commerce solution. Each client's use case is different, which is why I love WooCommerce; the flexibility to customize it as needed for each client is really easy. Plus, because the base software is free, my clients only need to pay additional if they need specific customization or options not available in that base package.
  • Implementation is quick and straightforward.
  • The free base software is often enough for most clients.
  • Customization options are endless with add-on plugins.
  • Because of how the WordPress database is structured, WooCommerce isn't great for large or complex e-commerce sites.
  • More out-of-the-box options would be nice within the base software.
  • Because add-on plugins are developed by 3rd parties, sometimes you get conflicts that break things.
WooCommerce is best for newer stores that don't need a complex solution right away, or have a more basic e-commerce store with products that are sold individually or don't require a ton of customization. It can be up and running within hours.

For large e-commerce stores with a huge number of SKUs or very high order volume, WooCommerce will begin to get bogged down managing all of the data in the database. Sometimes it's hard to find the right plugins to do the exact customization you're needing.

We use WooCommerce on my client's website. They sell products that are available for local delivery only. They do not have a storefront; their website is the only way for customers to find them and order from them. Therefore it solves the most basic problem: it allows them to have a business. They previously used a third-party site to list their products but that site closed, so now they have complete control over their online presence.
  • Easy to add/edit products.
  • Easy to update stock status.
  • Integrates nicely with WordPress.
  • Reports are VERY basic -- it requires additional plugins.
  • Search is VERY basic -- it requires additional plugins.
  • Putting products on sale/offering a discount is VERY basic -- it's better if you have special plugins.
WooCommerce is well-suited for businesses that want to get up and running quickly and who do not need/want a lot of customizations to the out-of-the-box software. If you do want customizations, there are loads of plugins to choose from so probably whatever you want to do is possible, but be prepared for you (or a developer) to spend some time trying them out and configuring them. And even with special plugins, you might still need a developer to further customize them and/or adjust the styles so that the plugin functionality matches your site. I think it's probably quite powerful for larger sites with lots of products and lots of special features but I don't have as much experience with that so I can't say for sure (my client has 100-200 active products on their site at any given time).

The reason for preferring WooCommerce is its stability and affordability. I didn't have a good experience with WordPress, but if I talk about WooCommerce, it has brought a great revolution. Because it is quite light so it is really easy to run on cheaper hosting even. However, Magento comparatively I found to be heavier enough [that it] required sufficient hosting. I really like its outstanding ability to integrate with a lot of other software as well as plugins. It introduces a wide range of features that prove really helpful to web developers and business owners. For serious budget constraints companies, it will be the most suitable option because it is free.
  • The first thing which impressed me the most is that it is free. Another thing which is most admirable is its compatibility.
  • I prefer it for its integration. It is perfectly used for building multiple sites.
  • One of the most appealing things is that it is open source. I think there is no other powerful E-commerce platform than this. WooCommerce is one of the matchless online shops. Its mobile application is very much beneficial that helps me in managing my store conveniently via mobile phones. It is really a good way of managing the online store. We can easily upload products, can make any modifications, and also assigning variations is easy through this.
  • Moreover, the availability of thousands of plugins further helps us a lot in extending the functionality of WooCommerce so conveniently.

WooCommerce is used to allow our readers to subscribe to our magazine (options including print or digital) and also to allow them a good deal of self service to edit their personal details, shipping addresses, billing address, and also to purchase gift subscriptions for loved ones. Through other Wordpress functions we’ve integrated Woocommerce into our entitlement system too, to unlock subscriber only content and even grant access to a subscriber only iPad app.

WooCommerce is perfect for everything except when there’s a single product, especially if it’s digital only, that doesn’t require much of a website around it and only checkout options — in which case Woocommerce is overkill and something like Gumroad could probably do the job.

It also requires a Wordpress environment so if that can’t be had for whatever reason then Woo is a non starter.

But for any traditional Ecommerce environment where Shopify or BigCommerce or other platform would be considered, WooCommerce is always preferable because it’s much more customizable and flexible.

WooCommerce is well suited when a custom store is needed, because it relies on WordPress it has a great support and customization with plugins or code. Most of them are well supported by the developrs or the community itself. You also can find great examples of code to customize functions under WooCommerce documentation.
Also there are groups in Facebook, LinkedIn to provide support or guidance to WooCommerce. But the learning curve is kind of complex. Depending on the business needs.

If you want an easier and better UI, you can use Shopify, it's easier to understand, manage but less easier to customize.

I have used WooCommerce on a lot of my clients site. And one of the site is India's top Kids food online portal - MyLittleMoppet Foods. WooCommerce made it possible for naive clients to have their shop online easily with out of the box solutions related to shipping and pricing.

  • Big community around it for trouble shooting problems
  • Does not provide everything out of the box, for certain features you will have to install additional plugins.
  • Their own addon plugins are costly.
  • The Order table uses wp posts meta table, For those who have good amount of orders coming in, the table will keep getting larger by time that it might hog the server.
Well Suited for:
  • Low cost quick online shop setup
  • Very easy to set up
  • Good support from the community for trouble shooting issues.
Less Appropriate:
  • You have to manage your own server for performance optimization
  • Based on PHP, there is always a chance of getting hacked if you use too many third party plugins
  • Does not cover everything out of the box - for an example hiding other shipping methods if free shipping is applicable. Weight based shipping etc.

We use Woocommerce for our e-commerce website, in order to sell our services, e-learning courses, digital downloads, and subscriptions.
It has solved our need to have an e-commerce platform, managed by ourselves with many features, and keep costs under control.

We sell very few products but the feature and the very fast learning path of Woocommerce give us the possibility to have a very professional e-commerce service on our site.
  • Simple to use.
  • Free (at least if you use the basic features).
  • Well-supported.
  • Tons of plugins and addons.
  • Seamlessly integrated with most WordPress themes.
  • Fast learning path.
  • Some plugins are overpriced.
WooCommerce is well-suited when you need simple e-commerce solutions, they have literally tons of plugins/integration and can be fitted for most needed. The setup is very simple and most Woocommerce themes are compatible with WooCommerce.
You can integrate with other platforms and exchange data using integrations or API.

It's also able to manage shops from small to medium/high size. Obviously, if you need a very large e-commerce [store], it might be worthwhile to point to other platforms or custom solutions.

Furthermore, Woocommerce relies on WordPress and requires minimal knowledge and web hosting to install it. If you have no technical knowledge you can choose other cloud-based products.

We use WooCommerce to store all of our catalog's product information, which is under 500 products right now. We have used other tools in the past but found out about the extensibility power against its competitors.

I have implemented WooCommerce on multiple websites. If you are already using or plan on using WordPress it’s a wonderful solution with many plugins and extensions that utilize its core to expand to make most store/shop configurations. Being able to easily implement an online store and manage it from your website’s backend makes it convenient to manage.
  • Works with existing WordPress sites.
  • Can be customized with plugins to fit most use cases.
  • Great way to make a store for a side hustle.
  • Could be more user friendly and have better internal analytics.
  • Would love to be able to do more dynamic customizations without a plugin.
  • Leaner code in the front end would be appreciated to improve code-to-text ratio.
WooCommerce can be used for small stores to larger projects. Using plugins and extensions you can customize WooCommerce and WordPress to fit most use cases. If you can be creative, the sky is the limit. Some technical knowledge is needed for setup and maintenance though. Overall I would recommend WooCommerce as its functionality and ability to be implemented on most projects is amazing.

Being a WordPress design agency, WooCommerce is our go-to solution for our internal subscription and payment needs and also our client's e-commerce needs. There are situations where there are better solutions but we find that [for] 90% of what we need WooCommerce works for us and is either free or very low cost.
  • It works out of the box.
  • It's easy to set up for beginners.
  • It's robust enough to handle large stores.
  • There are enough add-ons out there it's hard not to find a prebuilt solution for your needs.
  • Without some work it can be slow.
  • It should contain membership and subscription features as default.
  • Some of the options for adding variations can be tricky or confusing for new users.
By default, we recommend WooCommerce for almost every shop solution a client (or ourselves) needs. Ecommerce, memberships, subscription-based business, and digital downloads.

Here are some scenarios where finding another solution may work better.
  • You need an all-in-one solution for your membership site.
  • You ONLY sell digital products
  • You need something quick to test a new concept.

We use WooCommerce as a sales platform for a few client websites that we have built. It's a great way to implement a shopping cart feature into any WordPress-based website. It makes it really easy to list products, set up shipping, and take credit cards via a slew of different payment gateways.

If you are building an online store in any capacity, WooCommerce plus its slew of plug-ins is a great option.

  • Great support from the company.
  • Can easily build products, either real or virtual, or even subscriptions.
  • Sometimes it feels like there are too many options - finding a way to remove unused items would be a great feature.

  • There is no feature for the detailed history of a particular customer, which is usually helpful in targeting the right audience over and over.
I will recommend this tool with great zest to all those companies who want to initiate their online selling stores. It is a universal platform that will equally benefit all the organizations for the selling as well for the marketing of their product. WooCommerce will definitely add value to your business.

Currently, I am at a Start-Up Website Marketing company. We offer numerous different services to help Small Businesses achieve success. I currently use WooCommerce to sell full E-Commerce stores, as well as different marketing packages for Small Businesses. I am currently the only person working for my company. WooCommerce makes it possible for a small business such as myself to sell products and services.
  • It gives someone with limited web design experience the ability to easily sell products and services.
  • It easily integrates with Wordpress.
  • It is free to start and get set up.
  • It would be nice to have more access to tutorials on how to set up some of the more complicated features.
  • The shopping cart page itself would be a little challenging for a beginner to set up.
  • A larger variety of display options would be helpful.
WooCommerce is well suited for anyone who is looking to sell any product or service online. It is also easy to set up and transfer to another E-commerce website, making it ideal for someone who is in the web design or internet marketing space. It may not be the best solution for sites with a huge selection of products.

We use WooCommerce to sell various services to our clients, but primarily business cards and websites. The best thing is that everything is in one place and clients can read everything about the service or product and purchase right then and there without having to make an appointment to come in and learn about the items. Clients also love having the ability to pay by credit card rather than a check or cash.
  • Payment Gateway - There are many gateways to choose how you get paid and your payments are processed. The most common one is undoubtedly PayPal, but WooCommerce supports many others including Stripe and First Data, to name a couple.
  • Extensions - this is both a pro and a con. The good side is that there is an extension for almost nearly any functionality you can think of. Need to specifically book appointments? There's an extension for that. Need to add on different options to your product so that the user can customize their order and the price will adjust accordingly? There's definitely an extension for that. These are just two examples, but the library is pretty extensive.
  • WordPress integration is great (particularly with an Avada theme) and you really don't have to do much to get your site up and running to start selling. The user interface is pretty intuitive if you have experience with WordPress and it's not all that different from configuring any other plugin.
  • The core software is completely free and available to use for anyone. You only get basic functionality, but even so, you can do a lot with it.
  • Expense - this is the biggest con for WooCommerce. While the core software is free of charge, the extensions will totally get you. They can be as little as $39/year and run up to something like $249/year for one license for one extension to be used on one domain. And if you have a serious store of any kind, you are going to need a few extensions. Even for payment processing, if you want any other option than PayPal standard, you're going to have to pay unfortunately. Also the fee is not one time, it is recurring annually. I think you can keep using the extension once your year is over, but you will no longer get updates and support. For me, the expense is worth it. But for others it may not be.
  • There's a rather specific con that I have that others may not. I utilize the Subscriptions extension along with the Add-ons extension. Both are amazing in functionality separately, but there is no option for me to categorize my add-on as a one time fee for an option or as part of the recurring subscription charges. It automatically rolls the charge in with the recurring fee. Now there is a very roundabout and not that user-friendly way to get around this, but I feel like this is a huge oversight on WooCommerce's part.
WooCommerce is well suited for pretty much any type of online store. It works really well with WordPress and has a very extensive library of extensions that you can purchase to customize your store for your needs. You could sell anything from massages to spoons to coffee bean subscriptions on it. But beware the yearly costs if you are selling anything more complicated than one simple product for one price without variations. You will definitely have to purchase extensions for that scenario.

We use WooCommerce for our ecommerce website. We use Wordpress to publish information on our company and products and WooCommerce to sell computer hardware an accessories. WooCommerce is easy to use and alllows us to manage our webite without having to hire expensive outside consultants which we had to do with our prior website that used the Manento ecommerce platform.

  • Too many updates - Seems like there is always a pending update
  • Better image management
  • I wish it had more native shipment management functionality
Really great for small businesses that cannot afford an outside IT professional. We used to use Magento, but it was so complex and difficult to change unless you hired an outside consultant. So glad that we switched.
