Perspective on Workday Professional Services Automation from Acquired Small Business

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I have had multiple experiences with using the Workday Professional Services Automation software; as a consultant, in a large Fortune 500 company, and most recently when the small FinTech company I was working for was acquired by Nuveen/TIAA. The software was used as a one-stop-shop at Nuveen/TIAA for all things HR-related: payroll, benefits administration, recruiting, performance evaluation processing, etc. Workday is a powerful tool that is a good fit for large, multi-national corporations. In my opinion, it is a more technologically advanced/flexible version of the Oracle suite I utilized in roles 10+ years ago.

Pros

  • One system to cover all HR needs
  • Multi-user database with permission control
  • Intuitive interface for end-user

Cons

  • Ability to customize to non-standard/one-off processes
  • One size fits "most situations" solution
  • Difficult to rollout across organization - great once fully implemented

Most Important Features

  • One stop shop for all HR needs
  • Automation of repetitive, tactical HR tasks
  • Multiple users with permission controls

Return on Investment

  • Eliminates the need for administrative HR support
  • Allows HR professionals to be more hands-on/consultative to organization as they are freed up from "paperwork"
  • Allows HR to quickly run reports/utilize big data to make informed decisions

I love how easy it is to access any of these files and how much time it saves us. It's just as easy to update any of the information too. Workday is a Great Option for Large Organizations

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I primarily used Workday as a central location for all things HR-related. I didn't manually have to clock in or out, but there was a time-keeping feature. It also tracked all of my vacation and sick hours and allowed me to request vacation/sick time within the portal. It also had all of my pay information and kept track of historical salary information (merit increases, bonuses, etc.). It also was extremely helpful in finding people within our organization. It had an organization tree, so you could find individuals as well as teammates on their team and supervisor/bosses, along with contact information such as their work email and/or phone number, so it was really easy to find anyone within the organization and anyone else associated with them if you needed it. Workday also housed some information about benefits and what I had enrolled in for that fiscal year.

Pros

  • Time Tracking
  • Organizational Employee Overview
  • Benefits Tracking
  • Pay/Salary History

Cons

  • More clearly defining areas within the portal.
  • More tutorial training

Most Important Features

  • Time tracking
  • HR communication

Return on Investment

  • I believe it freed up time for HR team members so employees could get what they needed rather than asking the HR team for everything.
