Changepoint is basic and would, therefore, work for businesses with uncomplicated requests, pretty straightforward workflows and willingness to work with an unsightly solution. It is basic, from the UI to the search option and the way the information is captured, which can be frustrating and counter-intuitive at times. It is relatively robust (i.e. I have been using it for almost 2 years and have not seen it crash once) but it does log me out when the system has been inactive for about 30 minutes - and I am only notified about being logged out upon clicking the Submit button, meaning many a line of text have been typed more than once!

Planview
Portfolios are great for managing large portfolios of projects, especially projects with detailed schedules and dependencies. I would not recommend it for smaller projects due to the amount of required setup. Also, it's not an ERP system- the accounts are only summaries of expenses.

Pros
Planview
  • Changepoint has significant reporting capabilities, though of course, the data that comes out is only as good as the data that goes in. I enjoy being able to use the standard reports to understand exactly how much a project has cost us and to compare it to how much we are charging. This allows us to more accurately set our prices. Though we have not used the report designer capability, I understand that custom reports can be designed with relative ease.
  • Changepoint has a versioning capability for changes made to user profiles in the system manager, which I find particularly helpful. As a non-power user, it is valuable to be able to see what changes I have made to various profiles so that I can troubleshoot a problem down the line.
  • Changepoint has significant functionality well beyond the features that we are currently using, and for this reason, I think it is affordable and a good deal. Particularly if your organization is interested in dedicating the time and resources into using all of the features around project planning, resource allocation, etc., the price is well worth the value.

Cons
Planview
  • We use Changepoint to manage the IS organization. I would like to see more advancement in order to do benefits management.
  • I would like to see a capability where a project manager can build a very detailed work breakdown structure, but only require project resources to charge time and provide a task status at a higher level.

  • Capturing lower-level detailed expenditures within a project so that financial screens can show the details of the roll-up.
  • Reporting flexibility so that end users can create their own quick ad hoc reports for analysis.
  • Capturing matrixed skills on resources to ensure staffing is adequate and better align demand to supply.

Likelihood to Renew
Planview
Sometimes the decision to renew boils down to an old adage "if it isn't broken don't fix it". Previous to moving to Changepoint, it was obvious that we needed a better project management tool. Projects we completed on time but the time zone difference between the teams and several iterations of back and forth caused a number of communication issues with projects. The difference is night and day.

We have been a Planview customer since 1999 and have seen it grow and mature as a tool. We have looked at other tools and have found that PV continues to meet our needs and is easy for our resources to use. They work to stay up on the project management industry and the direction it is going, keep on on current technology so that we can work more effectively, provide excellent customer support and have great pricing for what they offer. We can purchase only the modules we need versus buying a tool where we would only use a portion of the functionality.

Usability

Portfolios can accommodate nearly any kind of project, portfolio, or other work. It supports relating the work to strategy and outcomes (i.e., products) and has lots of options for customizing the workflows of work and changes/risks/issues. Not to mention, you can customize the user experience by role, with very granular permissions and multiple custom reporting tile options. With a decent level of expertise, you can craft and support various user interface experiences appropriate to their role and knowledge, and that should only grow as Planview. I and Copilot roll out.

We are long time Planview users and its availability is only limited to our internal SLAs for nightly backups. I have never experienced any unexpected or prolonged software downtime from Planview itself.

There are occasions when the system is a bit sluggish. However, it may not always be on the Planview side. We are investing in better tools to monitor our network performance, which will help us diagnose issues more effectively in the future.

Going through proper channels of support is fine for minor to moderate issues. However, lately the critical issues that arise have been frequent and the standard support cases do not always seem to relay just how critical these issues are and we have to utilize our customer rep to help escalate. Fortunate to have that escalation method.

Odoo, like this platform, has allowed us to efficiently organize our projects so that they can be prioritized by importance, to know which is the most urgent, in addition, it has also allowed us to assign work in an organized way among our collaborators, and their reports have allowed us to improve.

Return on Investment
Planview
  • Employee efficiency has decreased significantly within our Project MAnagement team. The main causes are lack of logical steps/not user-friendly and the slowness of the entire program.
  • Changepoint PSA has greatly improved being able to track budgets for all projects. Before this software, budgets were done manually by hand and cross-referenced with Accounting. Now, we can pull a report out of the system, as long as all parties entered their time and data correctly.

  • The positive impact is the ability to manage our projects enterprise wide.
  • Managing and reporting on projects and programs via portfolios makes it easy to identify troubled projects/programs that need immediate attention.
  • The negative is that pushing too much change too quickly is hard for us. We need to get our users focused on the basics of PM before we can adopt everything else. We need to introduce change to different companies based on their maturity level. Too much change too quickly is not always beneficial. We need to focus on core competencies.
