What is LibraryWorld?

LibraryWorld is a library management solution that is presented in a series of modules:

The catalog module provides for the creation and updating of catalog and holding records. Users can import records from standard MARC format, hand enter records, or pull records from one of many online resources, including its Z39.50 connection to the Library of Congress. The Z39.50 protocal can also be used by client applications to search the library in a vendor independent manner.

The circulation module provides for fast check in, checkout, renew, hold, clear hold, and reserve of items for patrons. Enter a patron's bar code number just once, and then check out one or many items to that patron as required. Enter the next patron number and continue with that patron. With a bar code scanner the user only rarely needs to touch the keyboard. Circulation aims to provide quick email receipts to patrons after checking items out.

The patron module allows the user to import or hand enter patron records. Patron records can include an optional patron image for quick user verification. Items that have been checked out, reserved or placed on hold for patrons, can be checked in, checked out or cleared in the patron module. Basic and advanced searching is also available.

The serials module allows an easy method for tracking expected repeating items.

The inventory module allows the user to verify the status of a collection. The inventory process provides instant feedback on items that have not been checked in properly. A missing items report tells you which items are missing from the shelves.

LibraryWorld has a range of reports for each application. From catalog reports, patron overdues, and statistical reports to library spine and pocket labels.

The Online Patron Access Catalog (OPAC) is a separate program designed specifically to help patrons to search a collection. It provides basic and advanced searching with multiple display modes, items status and book jacket display. Link directly off a website for a transition to library searching with a return link back. The user interface can be customized to even look like the site.

LibraryWorld provides two approaches to search a collection using mobile devices. The first is through a Web application specifically designed with a custom user interface to allow mobile phone users easier access.

This software has been widely used in various library settings to address specific needs and improve operations. For example, it has proven effective in keeping print collection catalogs tidy without excessive advertising or over-engineering. In a special library, it has been successfully employed to automate resource management, ensuring efficient allocation of resources. Additionally, districts have found value in using this program, as it enables accurate inventory counts and facilitates deeper cataloging records. Furthermore, lending libraries have praised this simple and easy-to-use software for its ability to streamline operations and make employee training a breeze. Another key use case of this product lies in its capacity to provide online access to an extensive collection of resources, eliminating the need to purchase physical books. This has greatly benefited users by enabling them to find the books they desire to read and stay updated on newly acquired additions. High schools have witnessed the positive impact of this software by keeping students engaged in reading while maintaining a well-organized library. At college libraries, it plays a vital role in checking out books smoothly, ensuring efficient operations. Moreover, its implementation at large libraries for fast retrospective conversion has showcased the value of their resources to administration. By providing a rough idea of library holdings, this software aids in inventory management as well. School librarians have also praised it for maintaining accurate records and facilitating seamless library operations. Despite some limitations such as lacking certain requested features and technical support, the affordability of this product at $400 per year makes it a viable option for basic library services with administrative rights for district-wide use and support.

The users have made the following recommendations about the software for small to medium libraries:

  1. Improve user interface and navigation. Many users have suggested that the software could benefit from a more intuitive and user-friendly interface. They recommend improving the navigation system to make it easier for library staff to find and access different features and functions.

  2. Enhance reporting capabilities. Several reviewers have mentioned that the software could provide more robust reporting options. They suggest adding customizable report templates and a wider range of data analysis tools to help library personnel track and analyze various metrics, such as circulation statistics, patron demographics, and collection usage.

  3. Expand integration with external systems. A common recommendation is to enhance the software's integration capabilities with other library management systems or third-party platforms. Users would like to see improved compatibility with popular discovery tools, digital repositories, and online catalog systems. This would allow for seamless data sharing and streamline workflows between different library applications.

These recommendations are based on user feedback and are not endorsements or criticisms of the product.
