(1-10 of 10)R6R! Robust 'n' Reliable!
This doesn't mean it is immutable, as with the new version, new characteristics (mainly to secure the OS) come up.
- Robust. A distro focused in reliability that allows you to patch live without the need to reboot.
- Complete installation options to fit almost any need.
- Yast2 is a great system-wide configuration utility.
- Documentation for advanced functionalities are not always well documented.
- Subscriptions are not an easy thing to manage, but no impossible.
- There are some issues related to too strict rpm management.
A Superior OS Especially for SAP
- Upgrade in place with short downtimes.
- SUSE supported software packages for almost everything
- Stable and high preforming OS
- Like most software companies license audits can be frustrating
- Multi-cloud environment support
- Stability
- Specialized OS for SAP
- good documentation
- Sometimes good packes from openSUSE leap don't make it into the SLES repos
- The documentation is good, but sometimes some topics are missing or a work in progress
A good fit for running SAP workloads
- very stable product
- excellent package selection
- up to date repository's
- top notch support department
- Sometimes good packes from openSUSE leap don't make it into the SLES repos
- The documentation is good, but sometimes some topics are missing or a work in progress
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server leads the market
- Support
- Updates and Patches
- Education
- faster updates for some packages e.g. script languages
- Provides a stable Linux platform.
- Follows Linux standards better than most.
- Provides Enterprise supported products.
- The support window for service packs after a new SP is released is too short.
- Community engagement is low.
- There are times when supported packages fall too far behind and create compatibility issues with applications. The Open Build Service usually provides a way around this, though.
good sollution for running SAP workloads
- the learning curve and setup time are very reasonable
- the support engineers are fast, friendly, polite and know what they're doing
- the quality of the documentation is very high
- sometimes it takes too long for new versions of packages to appear in SUSE's repositories
- some open-source solutions that are valuable don't end up in the official repo at all (but you can install them from the OpenSUSE repo)
- sometimes niche topics aren't covered in the documentation
- Consistently performs well across various CPU architectures.
- It's very well supported both by the parent company, as well as SAP and other third-party companies.
- It is upgradeable across versions. We've performed upgrades from version 10 to 11 and from 11 to 12 without any major issues.
- Support is very good for well-known issues, but anything esoteric issues might require constant escalation to arrive at a resolution.
- Cost can an issue at higher levels of support.
- Yast (the gui management tool) is great for some tasks, but very cumbersome for many others.
It's suited any time where being able to upgrade the OS from one version to the next is critical. We've done upgrades without major issues from SLES 11 to SLES 12 in a very straightforward manner.
Most popular packages are present, and it has a consistent package base. The basic patch deployment tool is included as well. Cost can be an issue at higher levels of support, and you cannot mix support levels. SLES for SAP comes at a premium cost.
If the issue is an uncommon one, you will have a bit of a time trying to escalate to support.
Yast is cumbersome at times; great at some tasks, horrible for others.
The Best O/S for your SAP HANA environment
- When it comes to ease of using / administration of Suse Linux, we found the learning curve to be very small, coming in from a Windows environment. We were able to handle our admin tasks quite well and without any interruption.
- Response times of our server has also improved moving from an older Windows setup to the Suse Linux environment. We have not experienced bottlenecks in terms of performance of our SAP HANA and we can quickly run long running statements 300x faster with the help of Suse Linux and SAP HANA.
- Finally, we observed that Suse Linux has more security features out of the box that what we had from our Windows setup. There's lots of great content available online for us to learn more about Suse Linux and how to implement it.
- Our team just noticed that there are some issues we have on sharing of folders files between our CentOS and Suse Linux. The files on the shared folder have their permissions by default not available even for opening/reading even if the configuration was to give access to certain users.
- I just wished Suse Linux had a control panel feature out of the box which enables my team to administer the entire server via the web browser, instead of installing a 3rd party add-on like Webmin.
- As with any Linux distro available, GUI is still not as par with Windows server counterparts so part of the learning curve is navigating through the entire system, especially with the administration tools.
Mature, Reliable and Secure Linux Offering
Our implementation of Suse Linux was smooth. We configured a template for our organizational needs and then used it to deploy on multiple machines. The Auto YaST package makes automated installation convenient.
- It can be installed on Enterprise Servers, Mainframes, Workstations as well as desktop computers.
- If you are using Oracle Database, Orarun Suse Package makes your Oracle Database deployment very easy.
- We also loved the pricing model offered by Suse Linux.
- I haven't really faced problems with Suse Linux. But one of our applications generates Excel and Word doc reports on the server. We had a little challenge making it work on Suse Linux, as Suse Linux doesn't support Windows utilities directly.
