Overall Satisfaction with Vertex
We use Vertex on two platforms, Netsuite and BigCommerce. We are performing API calls when BigCommerce makes the sale, when the sales order gets imported to Netsuite, and when the cash sale receipt is generated. We use U.S. sales tax, but products are taxed differently in different states, such as digital items, clothing items, and food items. We also have many customers who have tax exemption certificates, and we are able to make them tax exempt in both of our platforms.
- Ability to customize with our complex business needs
- Customer Support is focused on our business needs
- Easy to install on BigCommerce
- Detailed instructions on installation
- Installation with Netsuite was more complex (partly because that's how Netsuite is)
- Sometimes making a sales order not taxable (since we have exempt customers) can take longer than it should
- Sometimes the tax is different between our two platforms, and it can take some effort to make it match
- Vertex for the solution that we needed was half as much as the old tax software that we used
- Our past solutions have not been able to exempt certain customers, so we were spending a lot of time manually adjusting sales orders in two systems (Netsuite and BigCommerce)
- We are now able to add more complex tax rules, such as charging sales tax on digital, food, and clothing items differently than we were able to before
In comparison specifically with Avalara, Vertex is better in every way. It is much more customizable and allows us to change the way our tax software is set up for our business needs. Avalara is much more constricted, and is using the SST system which can allow for simplified returns, but in our case was causing more problems. Avalara is also much more expensive than Vertex, for less capabilities. Vertex' customer support is much stronger than Avalara's, as they are focused on obtaining and retaining customers whereas Avalara was continually trying to find ways to get money from us.
