CSI WatchDOG vs. Microsoft Defender for Identity

CSI Watchdog is a great tool when carrying out individual vetting or multiple vetting and can help trace and trace elements that have been placed on red alert, allowing organizations to work with individuals whose reputation is not questionable. However, making entries on its screen can be a daunting task, especially for new users. One needs to familiarise themselves with these tools before one gains some level of proficiency and competence.

Microsoft Defender for Identity is a great solution for each company that has an Active Directory. It fills in the blanks for Identity related incidents that are being missed in the XDR platform. To get a full view on identity risks it is an essential component

• Option to run batch vetting

• pro-active measurements on possible breaches
• identity security posture

• The lack of template that can be used by novice users can be a huddle.
• I find it's UI a little basic, therefore improving on it would make it more competitive.

• setup can be complicated, with AD complexity
• Sometimes the load on DCs is pretty high, leading to performance issues
• Better tuning options for preventing false-positive/bening alerts

The only other product I have used is the System for Award Management (SAM), maintained by the US Government. Compared to this, CSI WatchDOG is much more reliable and has more options. I also believe the batch vetting/screening option in CSI WatchDOG gives it a definite edge over SAM.

Microsoft Defender for Identity is more specialized on the Identity platform, it is a single solution compared to a multi-solution. The integration is better when using the XDR suite in combination with Sentinel. Microsoft Defender for Identity gives a better overview of the security posture

• We have been able to trace and track many red lists within a short period of time.
• Through CSI watchdog we are able to carry out batch vetting.

• Cost impact was pretty high
• Learning curve, needed time (money) for training
• Greatly improved detections and gives more insights
