CTERA Edge X Series (discontinued) vs. wasmCloud

This is all about the selling you a "Device" and prices vary greatly between resellers. The devices work well, but the pure cloud solutions need a lot of work.

If you want to start pivoting your legacy code into a serverless paradigm this is the platform to target. If you want to start moving away from walled gardens and back into a space where code isn't centralized, costs can be offset by utilizing customer or edge hardware this is the platform to focus on. If you want a model that will scale well past many of the existing serverless frameworks, that won't get caught up in the security weaknesses of current paradigms this is what you need to invest in. If you want modern code to interact with legacy code in a safe way that doesn't expose vulnerabilities you can't patch against wasmCloud is awesome. If you want to write simple code that can jump from cloud to cloud to the user or edge node check it out!

• SQL Backups just don't work reliably. For us, we lost all of our SQL data backed up through the CTERA Application process. Although the logs indicated a success, that was really not the case. This came close to putting us out of business. Luckily I had taken a genuine SQL backup to a folder. Unfortunately it was a month old. We had to pick-up the pieces from there.
• Don't use it for file sync and share. There are better products out there i.e. anchorworks.com
• Support sucks. Good luck with response time and answers that are inconsistent between team members. For example I had to rebuild a VM from scratch. When I re-installed the CTERA client It obviously thought I was adding another device. When I inquired to tech support, one member said "copy the old Data folder" (I still had the old VHD. That did not work). The other directed me to the correct spot to just change the associated folder. The turn-around time was over 24 hours for this simple fix.
• Documentation, plenty of fodder but no real tech there.

• Simplified open-source model for on-boarding devs, i.e. bare host no elixir/GUI
• Home-labbers guide to wasmCloud
• Spark more community involvement for capability providers

wasmCloud is still in the early stages of development but the product is rapidly evolving and stabilizing and I feel it will be a preferred way of deploying and managing remote, distributed applications in the future.

The core team is extremely responsive in their provided channels. From slack to github issues, there is never a long wait for feedback or guidance.

Unfortunately CTERA does not stack up well if you want a pure cloud BDR. I have use iDrive and Asigra. iDrive has similar support and SQL backup issues. Asigra can vary widely in support and price, but the software is solid.

Have not made a purchase yet as we are still in the POC stage.

The team is incredibly helpful and informative about the product - I have not needed to use their professional services thus far.
