Blazing fast Image delivery and on the fly optimization for any device or browser!

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

As the Web Developer working with our Marketing department, I make use of ImageKit.io to deliver optimized images from our online store to all devices browsing our site, this includes but is not limited to mobile and desktop. The core business problems we wanted to address are faster image delivery and a simplified solution to optimize our current images for older products as well as new images for future products that have not yet been uploaded. The fewer code changes it would require the better for maintainability as well.

Pros

  • Automatically convert images for fast delivery based on browser support and network quality.
  • Well-documented integration documentation that is easy to follow when getting started with your implementation.
  • Easy to navigate user dashboard for setup and management of server origins and account settings. The usage analytics page is also handy to track and fix any 404 errors there might be for an image/s.

Cons

  • The Usage Analytics page could be laid out a little better and include filtering options, options may include path, country, IP Address, etc.
  • The ability to add an additional user to the starter plan would be great to illustrate the possibility to new customers.
  • The API Reference guide could include some more section-specific code examples for each of the supported technology stacks.

Likelihood to Recommend

E-Commerce is a perfect example where a service like ImageKit.io, is well suited. It takes a lot of the guesswork related to browser image format support, correct image dimensions for every kind of device, away from the developer. Thus reducing the need for maintaining code ourselves to check for and deliver an image for every user and his specific browser. This reduces code maintenance time in the long run and less custom code will ensure stability after integration for our online store running on OpenCart 3.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We have connected imagekit.io to our S3 bucket that contains close to 400GB of fine art images. Our website frontend then uses the imagekit.io CDN to render all images. We also make heavy use of their transformations, so for example by simply adding something like `?tr=w-200,h-200` imagekit will then serve a 200x200 pixels thumbnail of the actual image.

Pros

  • The imagekit team is very hands-on. Whenever we had a question or an issue, we were able to reach out via their chat and got friendly and competent replies quickly.
  • The documentation is superb and the web interface is very user friendly as well.
  • The cost is reasonable, but can blow up if traffic blows up.

Cons

  • We don't have any issues with imagekit whatsoever. The only thing that always can be improved with pretty much any service is cost, but I understand that this is a tough call, as they are basically just forwarding bandwidth cost from AWS that we would have anyways if we would build this service ourselves.

Likelihood to Recommend

ImageKit is very well suited as a CDN for images. It can generate thumbnails on the fly, show metrics about usage and traffic, and can even serve highly compressed web images and tiny blurry placeholder images to speed up the initial load time. It also has a very good React component that allows for lazy-loading images that are below the fold.
