What is Perimeter 81?

Cloud and mobility are creating a mega shift in traditional network security, and hardware-based solutions are not capable of accommodating this migration.

Perimeter 81’s Zero Trust Secure Network as a Service utilizes a Software-Defined Perimeter architecture, to offer greater network visibility, seamless onboarding, and full compatibility with all major cloud providers. Perimeter 81 also incorporates security capabilities following the SASE model, a term coined by Gartner to describe the convergence of security and network management inside one platform.

The vendor states their product subscribes to this new concept and gives companies of all industries and sizes the power to be fully mobile and completely cloud-confident. With Perimeter 81 users can deploy private servers with static IPs, manage team member access and gain network visibility with an all-in-one cloud management portal.

Plus, with single-click apps for every device, 256-bit bank-level encryption, and patented Automatic Wi-Fi Security feature, Perimeter 81 is designed so that users can enjoy peace of mind online knowing one's team is always working securely – even while on the go.

Perimeter81 provides us with a secure network to connect our team members to, primarily from remote based locations, allowing us to tunnel securely into other cloud services or lock down access to web services to a specific static IP (provided by Perimeter81). We use the Perimeter81 agent on a mixture of Windows, Mac and Linux endpoints, which then allows us to connect to one of the secure networks we've setup - it's easy to setup for new starters.
  • Administration of network / tunnels is straight forward
  • Easy to install for new starters
  • Support for a mixture of operating systems
  • Automatic agent upgrades - sometimes these fail and require a manual update
I'd suggest that Perimeter81 is recommended when you want something that is easy to administrate, with little maintenance, unlike a VPN/secure network that you host and manage internally. We've had incidents when there has been downtime at Perimeter81, which has effectively locked us out of some of our secure services (anything locked down via IP). They have made improvements to their infrastructure and it seems to have improved in recent months, but this is something to keep in mind for critical connections.
  • Secure network / VPN
  • Support for linux (many providers only support Windows and OS X)
  • Simple agent deployment

We use it for worldwide VPN networks and to help authenticate our employees logging into several different applications. The service allows you to segment to dial in via various regions around the world. They help with a delay in speeds etc. I only use it when I need to log in to corporate databases and systems that require I use our VPN.
  • Simple easy to read icon.
  • You can hover over and see if you are logged in via the systems tray on your computer.
  • Easy to switch between regions around the world.
  • Customer support was lacking before, now seems better.
  • Had much difficulty using Chrome as my browser to install the app.
  • Increase the throughput speeds at time would be nicer.
I think it is a great option for when you need to use a VPN across a corporation or enterprise especially around the world with people working in different regions. It also allows you to switch regions if you are having an issue in one of their regions. It gives great flexibility in that regard.
  • Worldwide coverage.
  • Ability to switch to different regions.
  • One bill for the whole organization.
  • I think it is just a cost of doing business.
  • I don't think the cost is too prohibitive.
  • We also use it as an example of what a small cost can provide big protection for your security.
In the beginning, it was a bit rough getting it to work and getting any kind of quality support from customer service. But recently they really improved their service and customer service. I believe they raise 100M in new funding which provides them the resources to make a better product with better tools and a better help desk.
