Use Cases and Deployment Scope

It's used by IT exclusively, for the IT security team.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Easy to set up.
Good pre-packaged signatures, and signature update service.
As of latest version, very good interface (UI)

Cons

Software updates and patches across an infrastructure are a nightmare.
The physical install involves a lot of individual boxes in a datacenter... this could be consolidated.
Support knowledge of their own product is sometimes lacking.

Alternatives Considered

OSSIM, SNORT and User Insight

We selected them because we believed AV offered an improvement over free tools.

It's well suited where budgets are large and a solution needs to be easily set up. Anywhere that money is tight, or expertise deep, there's no need to pay for these things... download OSSIM and off you go.

Hi David! I'm the Product Manager for USM Appliance. The feedback is very much appreciated! We've put a lot of effort over the past year towards extending our Support / Knowledge Base coverage and to improving the update process. I'd love to touch base to hear how we've done and to get some more general product feedback. One small point. Your review title implies that OSSIM is a paid product. Would you mind correcting that?
