Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Catalyst IE3200 Rugged Series Switches
We have used the Cisco Catalyst IE3200 Rugged Series Switches for deployments at various city agencies. They replaced another vendor that had failing equipment (supposed to be rugged) and the Cisco's did a GREAT job at keeping the network stable. Prior to the replacement, the network had issues with stability and flapping ports which caused re-convergence issues across the traffic network.
Pros
- Stability in harsh weather conditions
- Easy to configure with a GUI that non network professionals could use
- Customization with the ability to have the most common amount of SFP ports needed
Cons
- Firmware update notifications could be better
- Security bug notifications
- Option for integrated power supplies
- Leveraging detailed logs
- Integration to Network monitor solutions
- Easily digestible GUI
- Keeping operations up and running with minimal downtime
- Visibility to solve other issues not directly related to the problem at hand given the robust logging
- Increase the trust of vendor selection with their proven track record
Most of the traffic networks do not leverage Cisco DNA Center as it is more of an enterprise solution but they really should. The cost and technical expertise of it is what can cause a roadblock to the traffic networks adopting it. Most will use a simple network management solution.
It is very important to segment and reduce the broadcast domain and also to provide a security best practice baseline with segmentation. As there are often bugs in different hardware and software vendors, this limits the blast radius if a particular device is compromised.
