Overall Satisfaction with Portainer
Portainer serves as the single pane of glass for managing any fixed application servers, as well as any docker-compose applications we use in production that are otherwise unsuitable for more specific cloud products (such as ECS or EKS on AWS). Currently, this is 2 virtual machines, with plans for a third as scaling demands.
Pros
- Management of docker compose applications
- GUI for managing docker containers and application stacks
Cons
- Docker swarm integration feels half-baked
- No generic SAML option for SSO
- No way to update Portainer itself without getting on the command line
- Misbehaving containers sometimes cause Portainer to misbehave (saying that it cannot control the stack)
- SSO/access control
- Docker compose application management
- Positive impact: less administrator time spent on deploying and managing containerized applications
